Why MercadoLibre’s Record Revenue Is Producing Less Profit

$MercadoLibre(MELI)$’s second quarter demonstrated the trade-off at the centre of its strategy: spending heavily on free shipping, logistics and credit can deepen its competitive advantage across Latin America, but those investments are reducing current profit even while revenue reaches records.

MercadoLibre reported after the August 5 market close for the quarter ended June 30. Revenue increased 50% year over year to approximately $10.2 billion, above the roughly $9.7 billion expected. Net income nevertheless declined 11% to $466 million, its third consecutive quarterly decrease. Operating income fell 17% to $683 million, and the operating margin narrowed to 6.7% from 12.2%. MercadoLibre’s official second-quarter release provides the results and operating metrics.

The bullish thesis is the ecosystem. Gross merchandise volume grew 36% on a currency-neutral basis, total payment volume increased 56% and active buyers reached 89 million. Customers who use both commerce and fintech products increased 37%. Connecting marketplace, logistics, digital payments, advertising and credit can lower customer-acquisition costs and make the platform harder to replace.

The bearish issue is that rapid growth is becoming more capital- and risk-intensive. MercadoLibre’s credit portfolio expanded 75% to $16 billion. Lending can increase shopping and payment engagement, but it also introduces funding and credit-loss exposure that a marketplace alone would not bear. Free shipping in Brazil and credit-card expansion were important reasons profit declined. Reuters’ August 5 analysis explains the spending choices and management’s long-term rationale.

Currency volatility, regulation and competition from regional and global platforms remain additional risks. At roughly 51 times trailing earnings before the after-hours reaction, the shares required continued rapid growth and eventually better margins.

MercadoLibre closed regular trading at $1,922.57 on August 5 after ranging from $1,749.29 to $1,992.59, then fell about 4.5% after hours. The post-market decline indicates concern about profitability, but the wide regular-session rebound also shows demand below $1,800.

MELI Weekly Chart

$MercadoLibre(MELI)$’s weekly chart is approaching a major technical inflection point, with price rebounding strongly from the $1,593–$1,631 support zone and now testing the $1,903–$1,945 resistance band, which also converges with the long-running descending trendline. This confluence makes the current area a critical breakout level: a decisive weekly close above roughly $1,945, ideally followed by a successful retest, would suggest that the corrective structure is ending and could open the way toward approximately $2,050–$2,150, followed by higher prior swing areas; conversely, rejection here could send MELI back toward $1,750–$1,800, with $1,593–$1,631 remaining the major structural floor.

For a trader willing to own MELI at a lower effective price, I would favor waiting for breakout confirmation and then selling a 30–45 DTE cash-secured put around the $1,700–$1,750 strike, preferably in the 0.10–0.20 delta range, rather than selling puts aggressively while price is still directly underneath resistance. This places the strike below the recent consolidation while allowing the position to benefit from time decay, although a weekly breakdown below roughly $1,600 would materially weaken the bullish thesis and warrant reassessing the trade.

The business evidence leans bullish, but the stock outlook is neutral because margin compression and credit exposure offset exceptional revenue growth. The view would be invalidated by rising delinquencies, engagement slowing despite higher spending or margins continuing to contract without evidence of stronger future economics. It would become more constructive if current investments sustain growth while operating margin begins recovering. This is personal opinion for education and is not financial advice.
