Moderna Surges 177% and Sparks Biotech Rally — Is It Time to Jump In?

On Wednesday, $Moderna, Inc.(MRNA)$ soared 177%, adding around $44 billion to its market cap, while $默沙东(MRK)$ climbed 12.6%.

The ripple effect lifted biotech ETFs across the board. $纳斯达克生物技术指数(NBI)$closed 6.4% higher, notching its biggest single‑day gain in six years.$SPDR S&P Biotech ETF(XBI)$rose 5.9%, $生物科技指数ETF-iShares Nasdaq(IBB)$ gained 6.6%, $iShares Genomics Immunology and Healthcare ETF(IDNA)$ jumped 13.3%, and $ARK Genomic Revolution ETF(ARKG)$ advanced 10.5%. The rally spread from individual stocks to the broader biotech sector.

Moderna’s massive rally stems from a key clinical breakthrough. A personalized mRNA cancer vaccine co‑developed by Moderna and Merck showed positive Phase III results in melanoma patients, demonstrating its ability to lower cancer recurrence and metastasis risk. This clinical milestone not only boosted Moderna and Merck shares, but also lifted biotech‑focused ETFs and restored market confidence in mRNA‑based cancer therapies.

This positive readout has triggered a material re‑rating for both companies. Previously, investors had turned bearish on Moderna amid fading COVID‑19 vaccine demand. Merck’s Keytruda also needed new combination regimens to sustain its growth trajectory. This Phase III success has reignited market optimism over their long‑term upside. Should this personalized mRNA cancer vaccine expand beyond melanoma into lung, kidney and other solid tumors, its addressable market could reach tens of billions of dollars. Both firms’ long‑term revenue profiles, profit outlooks and valuation multiples may shift meaningfully, lifting valuation expectations for the whole mRNA oncology space.

Still, Moderna’s eye‑popping short‑term gain comes with steep risks for anyone chasing the stock. Rather than piling directly into Moderna at these elevated levels, biotech‑focused ETFs may offer a more prudent alternative.

Below are four widely‑followed biotech ETFs:

These four ETFs all fall under the biotech umbrella, yet they differ significantly in design and exposure.

XBI uses a modified equal‑weight methodology, giving it heavy exposure to small‑cap biotech names. It tends to deliver stronger upside during sector‑wide rallies, yet it also carries much higher volatility.

IBB tilts toward large‑cap pharma leaders. It boasts high liquidity and easy tradability, serving as a common benchmark for the biotech sector with comparatively more stable performance.

IDNA concentrates on gene‑ and immunology‑driven innovative drugs, giving it high thematic alignment with this mRNA vaccine catalyst. That said, its small asset base creates liquidity constraints for larger‑size trades.

ARKG is an actively managed fund. It does not track an index; portfolio managers pick individual stocks. It charges higher expense ratios, and its future performance hinges heavily on stock‑picking, leading to greater uncertainty.

Investors should weigh which sub‑themes they believe in, alongside their personal risk tolerance, before making decisions.

Not yet. MRNA has done this kind of face rip before in 2021 too, then gave back more than 80%

There are indeed risks, but the 2021 rally was mainly driven by COVID‑19 vaccine pandemic tailwinds. Once the pandemic faded, the stock pulled back hard. By contrast, this cancer therapeutic vaccine has its own independent commercial potential. Personally, I think there is room for growth[Great], but whether it will actually play out still depends on follow‑up clinical data and commercial execution.
