Why $IREN Has Lagged $NBIS
$IREN Ltd(IREN)$ reports earnings Thursday, and expectations are high for the company to finally deliver on its AI infrastructure story.
Yet the stock has been basically flat YTD, while $NEBIUS(NBIS)$ has surged 162%. I see six major reasons behind the gap.
1️⃣ Management Compensation
The two co-CEOs received 18.2M shares, roughly 6% of the company, without capacity, ARR, EBITDA or share-price targets attached.
Whatever the long-term merits, the optics were terrible. It created a major governance and PR overhang and made management look less disciplined to potential investors and partners.
2️⃣ The $6B ATM
$IREN has a $6B ATM program, creating ongoing dilution concerns.
$NBIS also has a $6B ATM and has used it aggressively, but managed the market narrative better. Even after its share price weakened, Nebius raised another $1B in April, at a substantially higher valuation than $IREN can command today.
3️⃣ The $50M Warriors Deal 🏀
The NBA sponsorship has been a major point of frustration for investors.
It looks particularly questionable given management previously argued that the company didn't need a marketing team because demand was already so strong.
4️⃣ Still No Major Hyperscaler Deal
The lack of a new hyperscaler contract has weighed on sentiment.
But there may be a strategic reason. $IREN appears to be holding out for better pricing, while Microsoft's $2B-per-year contract starts generating cash.
💰 More cash flow means more flexibility to accelerate the AI buildout.
5️⃣ AI Revenue Hasn't Arrived Yet
This is perhaps the biggest issue.
$IREN generated only $34M of AI revenue in Q1, compared with roughly $400M for $NBIS.
Investors are still looking at the income statement and seeing a Bitcoin miner trying to become an AI cloud company.
That perception only changes when meaningful AI revenue starts showing up.
6️⃣ $BTC Has Been Weak
Bitcoin has fallen roughly 34% from its highs, directly pressuring $IREN's legacy mining business.
For now, that makes the transition to AI even more important.
The story could start shifting now.
$IREN has begun servicing its $2B-per-year $Microsoft(MSFT)$ contract, meaning AI revenue should begin ramping sharply.
Promises aren't enough anymore.
$IREN needs to prove that its AI cloud business can actually generate substantial revenue.
Thursday's earnings could be an important test of whether that transition is finally happening.
