On 3 September 2026, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported a near 100% chance a "very strong" El Niño will last through February 2027.
Instead of creating fires, this intense cycle causes long droughts. The dry weather stops natural rainfall from quenching the flames, causing human-made fires to spread fast and burn deep underground.
