Live Recap 1: The Mix Is Shifting — Why 72% AI Adoption Still Isn't a Strategy
1.Live Review Introduction
Tiger Brokers livestream hosted by Vyann, featuring Matt Gamblin, Founder of The Company Coach. Matt is a Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ) with 15+ years of senior finance leadership experience across the UK and Australia, including as former CFO of Australian tech company Fliteboard through its international expansion, capital raising and ~$89M strategic sale. He's the creator of The Company Coach's "AI-Native Finance Function" concept.
This session opened Matt's outlook on how AI is reshaping finance and business, starting with a historical lens on technology-driven change and where AI adoption actually stands today.

2.History Doesn't Repeat, But the Pattern Does
Matt walked through four waves of technology-driven change: PCs and spreadsheets in the 1980s ( $Microsoft(MSFT)$ built an ecosystem around Windows and Excel), ERPs in the 1990s ( $Cisco(CSCO)$ replaced fragmented legacy systems with standardised data), business intelligence in the 2000s ( $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ used customer data to drive growth), and now AI and agents in the 2020s, with $Morgan Stanley(MS)$'s adviser-workflow rollout cited as an early enterprise case study. His point: each wave triggered its own doom-and-gloom cycle — he compared the current AI anxiety to the Y2K bug fears of the 2000s — but the recurring pattern is that production work contracts while interpretation, systems knowledge and judgement become more valuable.
3.Adoption Is Mainstream — Execution Is the Real Constraint
Citing KPMG data showing 72% of surveyed organisations using AI in finance operations in some form, Matt argued the market has moved past the awareness stage. But he flagged a nuance: most of that usage sits at the individual, general-purpose-platform level (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) rather than embedded in actual business workflows — comparable to how everyone adopted Google search without necessarily restructuring how work got done around it. The real gap now isn't whether businesses use AI, it's whether they've moved to specific, owned use cases.
4.Consumer AI vs. Enterprise AI: Why the Distinction Matters
Matt drew a sharp line between the two. Consumer AI is tied to the individual — their account, their habits, their judgement — which means if that person leaves the business, the process effectively leaves with them. Enterprise AI is owned by the business: integrated with systems, governed by permissions, tested, monitored, auditable, and built to survive staff turnover. His framing: "if the AI strategy lives in one employee's browser tab, it's not yet a strategy." The effort mix is also shifting — away from processing and reporting, toward decision support and governance.
Closing Takeaway
AI adoption is no longer the story — most organisations have already cleared that bar. The real divide forming now is between businesses still running on individual, consumer-grade AI habits and those building governed, enterprise-owned AI into their actual workflows.
