$NVIDIA(NVDA)$ China is signaling it may let Alibaba and ByteDance buy Nvidia's new RTX Pro 5500, per The Information.
Beijing's industry ministry asked the companies to report how many chips they want and how they would deploy them, and told some firms the purchases could be approved. ByteDance is reportedly weighing an order of roughly 1 million units, against Nvidia's planned output of about 500,000 chips per quarter for China.
The chip choice is the tell. The RTX Pro 5500 is a Blackwell workstation GPU, outside the data center accelerator category that export controls target most directly, so Beijing has more latitude approving it and Washington has less reason to block it.
The H200 lesson applies. Earlier this year Beijing conditionally approved H200 imports for ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, but deliveries through August ran far below the green-lit volume. Reuters could not immediately verify this report either. Approval is not shipment.
