TSMC Q3 Earnings Strategy: Good News Already Priced In
The Key to This Earnings Report Is Whether Capex Proves AI Demand Lasts Through 2027–2028
1. Basics
TSMC 3Q26 revenue was about $46.7B, up 18% quarter over quarter, already above the top of the company's own guidance. The main drivers were Apple/AMD moving to 2nm, and AI GPUs and ASICs moving to 3nm.
The market's focus is no longer the revenue beat. It's the 4Q guidance, 2nm ramp speed, and gross margin.
The market expects 4Q revenue to still grow 10–15% quarter over quarter, with full-year dollar revenue growth above 40%. But 3Q/4Q gross margin is about 67.0%/67.8%, a bit below the market's high expectations of 68–69%.
The long-term story is still strong: N3/N2 capacity is tight, advanced packaging demand is strong, 2026 capex is about $63–64B, and 2027 could rise to $83B.
Key thing to watch: If management confirms 2027 price hikes for advanced nodes and packaging, plus margin recovery, there's room for a valuation re-rating. If guidance is conservative or margins stay pressured, the revenue good news that's already partly priced in may not be enough to push the stock higher.
2. Volatility Estimate and Key Levels
Based on IV, this week's one-standard-deviation implied move is about ±$13.36, giving a theoretical Friday range of $432–$458.
Combined with the options structure:
Max pain: $440
Gamma flip point: $440.1
Current net GEX: +$31.5M / 1%
The stock is above the flip point, in positive Gamma territory. If earnings don't clearly beat or miss, the structure favors volatility being suppressed and price drifting toward the $440–450 range.
Upside resistance:
$450: recent Gamma wall, important near-term Call level
$470–475: this week's Call daily open interest is concentrated here; first breakout zone if earnings beat
$500: this week's biggest Call OI wall, about 10k contracts; also a major resistance in the wider structure
Downside support:
$440: max pain and Gamma flip level, the most important short-term switch
$430–425: this week's Put open interest concentration zone
$420: this week's stronger Put OI support, about 8k contracts
$400: the core Put wall on a bigger cycle; December chain Put OI is about 21k contracts, a medium-term structural support
3. Three Scenarios and Possible Responses (examples, not advice)
Scenario 1: Earnings meet expectations, close in $432–458 — base case
3Q revenue beating guidance is basically confirmed, but margin, 4Q guidance, and capex don't clearly beat high expectations. IV falls after earnings, and the stock chops around $440–450.
Consider a wider defined-risk range structure, or a dual sell strategy — sell call + sell put: for example, Put side around $420/$415$TSM 20261016 415.0 PUT$ , Call side around $470/$475$TSM 20261016 475.0 CALL$ to build the seller protection legs.
If you're willing to hold TSM long term, treat $420 as a watch level, not a mechanical buy point.
While above $440 and in positive Gamma, short-term volatility may be suppressed, but on earnings day don't treat "positive Gamma" as absolute protection.
Scenario 2: Break above $470–475 — 2nm, margin, or guidance clearly beats
Possible catalysts:
4Q revenue guidance above the market's +10–15% expectation
Management confirms 2027 price hikes for advanced nodes/advanced packaging
Capex raised along with clear order visibility and a high-return explanation
$470–475 is where near-term Call open interest is concentrated, and it needs volume to digest.
If bullish, use a defined-loss call spread instead of naked Call buying, to reduce the impact of post-earnings IV crush.
If it breaks above but can't hold $470, watch for a pullback near the Call wall.
Scenario 3: Break below $430, test $420 — margin or guidance misses
Possible catalysts:
Margin below high market expectations, and management can't clearly explain the 2027 recovery path
4Q guidance is conservative, or capex is raised but order/return explanation is weak
AI capex sustainability, customer concentration, or overseas fab costs become the market's focus
After breaking below the $440 Gamma flip level, short-term volatility may expand.
$430–425 is the first support zone, $420 is this week's stronger Put wall.
If $420$TSM 20261016 420.0 PUT$ also fails, the market may turn to watch the $400 medium-term Put OI support.
For bearish, prioritize defined-risk spread structures rather than naked option selling in a high-volatility post-earnings environment.
