CXMT Scared Memory Investors, But 15 October Gave Us the First Clue the Market May Have Overreacted
What a difference a day makes.
Earlier this week, memory looked almost uninvestable. CXMT's server DRAM expansion triggered fears that Chinese supply could weaken the scarcity economics behind the memory supercycle.
MU, SNDK and SK Hynix were hammered.
Then came 15 October.
Buyers returned and memory stocks bounced.
One green session does not make a bottom. But after such violent selling, I am asking a different question now:
Has the market finally found a price where investors are willing to defend the memory thesis?
I think we may be getting our first clue.
🔴 THE CXMT THREAT IS REAL, BUT THE MARKET JUMPED SEVERAL STEPS AHEAD
The bearish argument effectively became:
CXMT improves technology → production surges → DRAM supply rises → pricing collapses → Micron margins collapse.
Possible? Yes.
Proven? No.
CXMT still needs to demonstrate competitive yields, high-volume production, server qualification and attractive economics.
That is why I see CXMT as a credible long-term competitive risk, but not yet proof that Micron's current earnings engine has broken.
And importantly:
Server DRAM competition is not the same as leading-edge HBM competition.
That distinction remains central to my MU thesis.
🟢 WHY 15 OCTOBER MATTERS
The rebound does not tell me the correction is finished.
It tells me buyers finally appeared.
Now I want follow-through into the end of the week.
If memory stocks can avoid revisiting their panic lows, the market may be moving from:
"CXMT destroys the memory thesis"
to:
"CXMT reduces the scarcity premium, but the current earnings cycle remains intact."
That second interpretation creates opportunity.
🔵 MU: STILL MY PREFERRED MEMORY PICK
MU remains my highest-conviction memory name.
My thesis is becoming more specific:
HBM + AI infrastructure + customer commitments + technology execution.
I no longer want to rely on conventional DRAM prices rising forever.
My levels:
$860-$890: First Pick
We reached this zone. I accumulate cautiously.
$800-$840: Preferred Pick
My favourite risk/reward zone if HBM remains strong.
$740-$790: Strong Pick
I become aggressive only if the fundamentals remain intact.
$930-$950: First Recovery
This is now the most important near-term level.
$990-$1,020: Bullish Confirmation
Reclaim this and the recovery becomes much more convincing.
$1,080-$1,120: Next Target
Below $740: Thesis Check
MU does not need to return to $1,000 immediately.
First, I want it to stop making lower lows.
Then reclaim $930-$950.
That would tell me accumulation is replacing panic.
🔵 SNDK: STILL MY FAVOURITE OVERREACTION SETUP
SNDK interests me for a different reason.
CXMT is targeting DRAM.
SanDisk is predominantly NAND.
Yet SNDK was dragged down with the entire memory complex.
That does not make SNDK risk-free. But it raises the possibility that investors sold the basket first and asked questions later.
My levels:
$1,300-$1,350: First Pick
$1,200-$1,275: Preferred Pick
$1,100-$1,175: Strong Pick
$1,425-$1,475: First Recovery
$1,525-$1,575: Bullish Confirmation
$1,650-$1,700: Next Target
Below $1,100: Thesis Check
MU remains my stronger fundamental conviction.
SNDK remains my favourite potential mispricing.
🔵 WHAT I EXPECT INTO THE END OF THE WEEK
I see three paths.
🟢 35% Bull Case
The relief rally extends.
MU reclaims $930-$950 and SNDK pushes toward $1,425-$1,475.
Investors begin separating long-term CXMT competition from near-term earnings.
That would be the first convincing sign that the worst of the repricing may be behind us.
🔵 45% Base Case
This is still my highest-probability scenario.
MU trades roughly $850-$930 while SNDK remains volatile around $1,300-$1,425.
Green day, red day, another rebound.
Messy, but constructive if the stocks start producing higher lows.
A bottom is usually a process, not a single candle.
🔴 20% Bear Case
The rebound fails.
MU breaks $850 and SNDK loses $1,300.
Then I would prepare for MU around $800-$820, potentially $770-$790 if semiconductor selling accelerates.
That would hurt.
But if HBM demand remains intact, it could also create my preferred entry.
🔴 WHAT WOULD MAKE ME WORRY
I would become materially more bearish if several things happen together:
HBM demand weakens.
DRAM pricing falls sharply.
CXMT demonstrates strong production yields and meaningful scale.
Hyperscalers reduce AI capex.
MU lowers forward expectations.
And the stock continues making lower lows despite already compressed valuation.
That would be thesis deterioration, not simply price deterioration.
🟢 WHAT WOULD MAKE ME MORE BULLISH
The opposite combination:
HBM remains tight.
AI capex remains strong.
DRAM pricing stabilises.
CXMT's commercial ramp proves slower than feared.
MU holds the $850-$890 area.
Then MU reclaims $930-$950.
That is the sequence I want.
MY PLAN INTO THE WEEK END
I am not chasing the 15 October rebound.
For MU, I am comfortable starting around $860-$890, but I keep capital available for $800-$840.
For SNDK, $1,300-$1,350 interests me, while $1,200-$1,275 would offer better risk/reward.
If the stocks rally instead, I do not chase.
I watch whether MU can reclaim $930-$950 and SNDK $1,425-$1,475.
Price confirmation matters now.
THE REAL QUESTION
When MU traded above $1,000, investors loved memory.
When it fell toward $870, suddenly the same investors became frightened.
But a 15% lower share price does not automatically mean intrinsic value fell 15%.
CXMT deserves a discount to the old scarcity assumptions.
I agree with that.
What I do not yet see is evidence that Micron's HBM advantage or current AI-memory demand has suddenly disappeared.
That is why 15 October interests me.
The first buyers returned.
Now they need to prove they are more than short-term traders.
My map into the end of the week is simple:
🟢 MU above $930-$950: Recovery strengthening
🔵 MU $850-$930: Bottom-building
🔴 MU below $850: Prepare for $800-$820
The memory supercycle may no longer deserve the same scarcity premium.
That does not mean it is dead.
The market may simply be repricing the memory cycle from "perfect" to "still very profitable."
And at the right price, that difference can create opportunity.
I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!
Where do you think MU finishes the week: below $850, $850-$930, or above $930?
