WALL STREET REBOUNDS - BUT AI IS LOSING ITS GRIP
A dramatic intraday reversal, falling bond yields, and a market rotation that’s gaining momentum.
Wall Street staged an impressive comeback on Thursday. After tech stocks came under pressure early in the session, buyers stepped in and pushed the major indexes back into positive territory. The catalyst? Reassuring comments from $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ CEO Jensen Huang helped calm nerves around the AI trade.
A POWERFUL MARKET REVERSAL
The major indexes recovered from their intraday weakness:
-
Dow Jones: +1.08% (+556 points)
-
$S&P 500(.SPX)$ : +0.33%
-
Nasdaq Composite: +0.08%
The Nasdaq recorded its biggest intraday reversal since April, while the S&P 500 delivered its strongest such turnaround in more than three months.
Yet the recovery was far from uniform. The Dow outperformed significantly, reflecting strength in sectors beyond technology.
AI AND SEMICONDUCTORS REMAIN UNDER PRESSURE
Stocks
Despite the rebound in the broader market, the semiconductor sector continued to struggle. The iShares Semiconductor ETF fell for an eighth consecutive session, highlighting the persistent weakness in one of the market’s key growth engines.
Technology stocks also featured prominently among the session’s laggards, including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, $Dell Technologies Inc.(DELL)$ and Everpure.
The message is clear: a positive close does not necessarily mean the AI trade has recovered. Investors are becoming more selective, and the rotation away from some technology leaders appears to be gaining traction.
THE ROTATION IS WIDENING
Thursday’s strength came largely from outside tech.
Healthcare, materials, financials and consumer discretionary stocks all gained more than 1%. Healthcare led the sectors, rising 1.8%, while energy was the weakest, down 1.6%.
This broader participation helps explain why the Dow substantially outperformed the Nasdaq. As investors reassess valuations and risk, money appears to be finding opportunities in other parts of the market.
The question is whether this rotation represents a temporary adjustment, or a more durable change in market leadership.
BOND YIELDS PROVIDE SOME RELIEF
The bond market also supported the rebound, with yields recording sharp daily declines.
The report highlighted significant moves in the 10-year Treasury yield and the 30-year yield, easing some of the pressure that higher borrowing costs had placed on equities.
However, the sustainability of this relief remains uncertain. Investors will be watching closely to see whether yields continue to fall or resume their upward trend.
DON’T COUNT AI OUT JUST YET
Despite the recent volatility, the AI bull market may not be finished.
Upcoming earnings from the major technology companies could give investors a reason to reconsider their concerns. Strong results from the largest AI infrastructure and software players could reinforce confidence in the sector’s growth prospects.
$Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$ is scheduled to report on October 21, followed by $Microsoft(MSFT)$ and $Alphabet(GOOG)$ on October 28, with Amazon expected to report that same week.
These results will be crucial in determining whether AI leaders can justify their valuations, and whether the market’s current doubts are warranted.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Thursday demonstrated how quickly sentiment can shift: a market under pressure in the morning finished higher by the close. But beneath the rebound, the underlying story remains one of rotation, with traditional sectors showing strength while semiconductors continue to struggle…
