10/22 Strategy Preview | Longs Bet on AI, Shorts Hedge Against a Pullback
1. What Happened Today
Key takeaway: Results aren't bad, but the stock doesn't necessarily rise. Some money is still betting on AI long term, while short-term hedging is heating up.
Middle East tensions rising: Brent and WTI crude kept climbing. If supply risk continues, energy stocks may benefit, but high oil prices can also push inflation higher and hurt market risk appetite.
META: Strong results, but funding worries got more attention. Q3 revenue was $64.6B, up 26% year over year, but future AI investment and potential equity financing raised concerns. The stock rose 4%–6% after results, then gave it back and fell about 3% in the morning session.
LRCX: Slightly better results, but still fell about 7%. Next quarter's revenue guidance matched Wall Street but fell short of buyers' higher hopes. Semis fell about 4% in the morning session, and the market is rethinking AI equipment stock valuations.
Institutions are starting to play defense: Since October, hedge funds have been net sellers of global stocks, with short selling about 5x the size of buying. That shows risk control is rising, but it doesn't mean the market must fall.
Other earnings signals: TXN results were solid but the stock reaction was muted. NOK fell about 6%, dragged by short-term cash flow guidance. IBM rose about 4%–5% after the close on a software rebound.
2. What Money Is Betting On / Protecting Against
[Buyers] Long-term AI bets, short-term Put buying to hedge a pullback
SPY | 2026/10/27 767 Put $SPY 20261027 767.0 PUT$
— 37,000 contracts. The short-dated index Put shows near-term hedging demand.
QQQ | 2026/10/30 696 Put $QQQ 20261030 696.0 PUT$
— 22,000 contracts | $7.524M traded | underlying at $721.62. Near-month Put buying reflects short-term demand for downside protection. Watch whether tech stays under pressure. If the stock stabilizes, the Put can also lose value from time decay.
SPCX | 2027/04/16 215 Call $SPCX 20270416 215.0 CALL$
— 12,000 contracts | $10.5M traded | underlying at $163.10. A long-dated, high-strike Call reflects a bet on a big move up.
SPCX | 2026/10/23 155 Put $SPCX 20261023 155.0 PUT$
— 17,000 contracts. Short-dated Put buying may be hedging a near-term pullback. Watch especially whether the stock breaks below the strike before expiry.
DRAM | 2027/03/19 60 Call $DRAM 20270319 60.0 CALL$
— 30,000 contracts | $10.95M traded | underlying at $49.17. A big long-dated Call shows money betting DRAM has a lot of upside ahead. But with a long expiry, it still carries stock price and volatility risk.
CRWV | 2027/03/19 85 Call $CRWV 20270319 85.0 CALL$
— 14,300 contracts | $9.739M traded | underlying at $61.55. Money is betting on future AI cloud demand and upside in the stock, but this is a long-dated OTM contract — it doesn't mean the stock rises short term.
NBIS | 2027/04/16 260 Call $NBIS 20270416 260.0 CALL$
— 4,950 contracts | $8.9842M traded | underlying at $172.43. Money is betting on long-term upside. The strike is well above the current price, so the stock has to rise a lot for the contract to have real value.
TSLA | 2027/04/16 370 Call $TSLA 20270416 370.0 CALL$
— 1,407 contracts | $8.1606M traded | underlying at $386.70. The long-dated Call shows money still positioning for Tesla upside. But since the current price is already above the strike, it's not simply an OTM bet — watch cost and follow-through.
FXI | 2027/09/17 30 Put $FXI 20270917 30.0 PUT$
— 11,000 contracts | $1.54M traded | underlying at $32.91. The long-dated Put may reflect hedging or bearish demand on large China stocks, but one trade isn't enough to confirm the overall market direction.
[Sellers] Collecting premium, betting no big short-term move up or down
SPY | 2026/11/13 795 Call $SPY 20261113 795.0 CALL$
— 10,000 contracts | $2.63M traded | underlying at $774.30. Selling the Call may be a bet the index can't break 795 short term, or part of a combo. Need to confirm whether it's a naked sell or covered trade — don't directly read it as institutional bearishness.
INTC | 2026/10/30 110 Call $INTC 20261030 110.0 CALL$
— 18,000 contracts | about $1.5M+ traded | current price not provided. Selling the Call may bet it won't break 110 much before expiry, but without the current price and full trade data, we can't judge whether the strike distance is reasonable.
ORCL | 2026/12/18 90 Put $ORCL 20261218 90.0 PUT$
— 12,600 contracts | $1.3277M traded | underlying at $130.10. Tagged as a Put sale, it may mean willingness to buy the stock at a lower price, or a premium-collecting setup. The strike is far below the current price, but there's still stock drop and liquidity risk.
SMCI | 2026/11/13 41 Call $SMCI 20261113 41.0 CALL$
— 2,819 contracts | $600.4K traded | underlying at $37.23. Sellers may think the stock won't break $41 short term, or may be reducing risk on an existing position.
3. What to Watch for Related Assets
QQQ / SPY: Near-month Puts show hedging demand is rising. Watch whether the index can stop falling. If weakness continues, watch for Put buying to expand. If the index stabilizes, short-dated Puts can lose time value fast.
DRAM / CRWV / NBIS: Long-dated Calls lean toward betting on long-term growth in AI and memory demand. Don't read them as an immediate buy signal today. Focus on whether the stocks keep strengthening and whether new money confirms it.
META: Strong results and funding worries are pulling against each other. Watch whether AI investment turns into revenue, and whether potential financing further pressures valuation.
LRCX / TXN: LRCX shows the gap between high expectations and results; TXN shows good news may already be partly priced in. Watch whether semis stop falling and whether equipment stocks get buyers back.
TSLA / SPCX: Long-dated Calls reflect upside bets, but the Tesla–SpaceX merger news is still a rumor. Don't assume the merger will happen just because of big long-dated Call orders.
SMCI / ORCL / INTC: Seller positions are worth tracking, but don't directly equate them with bearish or bullish views. Confirm whether the trades are naked sells, covered, or spreads before judging the real risk.
4. What to Watch Before the Open Today
Index: Whether QQQ and SPY keep seeing near-month Put buying. If prices weaken at the same time, the hedging signal is more convincing.
AI and semis: DRAM, CRWV, and NBIS long-dated Calls are long-term bets, not short-term guarantees. Watch spot price action and whether sector money flow confirms.
Earnings stocks: META's funding and capex worries, LRCX's guidance gap, and TXN's muted reaction to good news are all clues for judging whether the market is starting to get picky about valuations.
Oil and geopolitics: Rising crude may add inflation pressure. If oil pulls back, market pressure may ease.
Options time value: Short-dated Puts expiring 10/23, 10/27, and 10/30 are sensitive to time decay. If the stock doesn't fall as expected, buyers can lose fast.
One-line read: Long-term money is still betting on AI, but short-term money is buying Puts for defense. Today, don't focus on how big the orders are — watch whether the index weakens, whether AI stocks hold up, and whether earnings good news can still push stocks higher.
