$Coeur Mining(CDE)$ CDE (Coeur Mining) — Is It Near a Technical Bottom?
Short answer: the price is at the extreme of its 52-week range, but the technical evidence points to a still-active downtrend rather than a confirmed bottom. There is no reversal signal yet — momentum is accelerating to the downside, not decelerating.
Where the price sits
Metric Value
Last close (2026-10-23) $13.45 (-3.10%)
52-week high $27.77
52-week low $13.155 (set 2026-10-23, i.e. today's low)
% below 52-week high -51.57%
% above 52-week low +2.24%
Position within 52-week range 2nd percentile
The stock closed essentially on its 52-week low — the low was made in the same session. That is the definition of a price at the bottom of its range, but "at the low" and "bottoming" are different things. A stock making a new low on expanding downside momentum is a downtrend in progress, not a base.
Trend structure: still pointing down
Short-term trend: decline; medium-term trend: obvious decline. The overall technical read gives a resistance level around $20.34 and no confirmed support level below.
Moving averages are in a clean bearish stack and falling: MA5 $14.58, MA10 $15.18, MA20 $16.25, MA30 $17.37 — price is below all of them, and the shorter averages sit below the longer ones. Every rally since late August has failed below the MA20.
The decline has two legs: from the 2026-08-28 high of $22.45 down to $14.68 (2026-10-14), a brief bounce to $15.89, then a fresh break to $13.155. The 20-day change is -30.0% and the 5-day change is -13.1% — the pace is steepening, not flattening.
Momentum: oversold, but not yet turning
RSI(6) 11.5, RSI(12) 21.1, RSI(24) 33.0 — deeply oversold on short and medium frames. Oversold, however, is a condition, not a trigger; in a strong downtrend RSI can stay pinned below 20 for extended periods (it already sat under 30 through most of early-to-mid October).
MACD DIF -1.24 vs DEA -1.02, histogram re-widening to -0.44 after briefly narrowing. That re-expansion on 2026-10-22/23 is a bearish re-acceleration, not a bottoming crossover.
KDJ K 11.7, D 15.8, J 3.5 — same picture: pinned at the low end without a bullish cross.
DMI: MDI 42.7 vs PDI 15.8, ADX 35.7 — a well-established downtrend with sellers in control. ADX has eased slightly from ~44, which only means the trend is maturing, not reversing.
Bollinger: price at $13.45 vs lower band $13.67 — trading below the lower band, an extension signal rather than a reversal signal. The bands are widening (upper $18.84, mid $16.25), consistent with rising volatility.
OBV has fallen to -30,879, a fresh low for the period — volume is confirming the decline, i.e. distribution, not accumulation. Volume on the down days (39-40M on 2026-10-22/23) is running above the 120-day average of ~34.3M.
What is driving it
The move is not company-specific noise: CDE is a silver/gold miner, and the sector has been selling off with the metals. On 2026-09-28 silver miners fell broadly as silver hit a one-month low, with CDE -5.5% alongside Hecla and Endeavour Silver
Sina Finance
. More recently gold and silver have continued to slip while copper and oil firmed, keeping pressure on precious-metal producers
Xueqiu
. With institutional ownership at 76.4%, CDE is also exposed to fund-level de-risking in the sector.
What a bottom would actually need to look like
Rather than a price level, watch for evidence of a shift in supply/demand :
A momentum turn: RSI(6) recovering back above ~30 and, more importantly, the MACD histogram narrowing for several consecutive sessions followed by a DIF/DEA bullish cross.
A volume signature change: a high-volume down day that closes well off its low (a rejection/washout candle), or a rally day on above-average volume — the opposite of the current OBV pattern.
Price reclaiming a short-term average : closing and holding above the MA5 ($14.58) and then the MA10 ($15.18), which would break the sequence of lower highs.
A stabilisation in the underlying metals — as a producer, CDE's own chart will not bottom durably while silver and gold are still making new lows.
Risks to the "near a bottom" thesis
Oversold can get more oversold. With ADX at 35.7 and price below the lower Bollinger band, the trend is strong enough that a further leg down toward the $13.16 low and below is a live scenario; the tooling shows no confirmed support beneath the current price.
The driver is external. Even a technically clean reversal signal in CDE can be invalidated by another leg down in silver/gold, which would drag the whole miner complex regardless of the individual chart.
Monitoring indicators: daily close vs $13.155 (52-week low) and $14.58 (MA5); MACD histogram direction; OBV slope; RSI(6) reclaiming 30; and the spot silver/gold trend.
