Alphabet (Google): Two Days of Volatility and an Options Trading Opportunity
Alphabet (GOOGL) experienced significant selling pressure over the past two trading days following its third-quarter 2026 earnings announcement. The stock suffered a historic decline of approximately 12.6% on Thursday, reflecting investors' disappointment with its earnings performance and concerns about its aggressive AI spending.
Despite reporting 25% year-over-year revenue growth and an impressive 103% increase in Google Cloud revenue, Alphabet faced several challenges. Search advertising growth was slower than expected, while its free cash flow turned negative at approximately US$9.1 billion. Investors are increasingly questioning whether the enormous investments in AI infrastructure, data centres and computing capacity will translate into sustainable profits.
In my opinion, this market reaction reflects a shift in investor expectations rather than necessarily a deterioration in Google's long-term business fundamentals. Alphabet remains a major player in AI, cloud computing, digital advertising and technology. However, the market is demanding stronger evidence that its AI investments can deliver meaningful financial returns.
The sharp decline also created opportunities for options traders, as increased volatility presented opportunities to capitalise on significant price movements. I managed to secure approximately US$460 in profit from trading Alphabet options over these two days.
My biggest takeaway is that even fundamentally strong companies are not immune to aggressive market corrections. Earnings growth alone is no longer enough; investors also want profitability, cash flow and clear returns on capital expenditure.
Going forward, I would remain cautious and watch how the stock stabilises, particularly around investor sentiment, AI monetisation and future earnings guidance.
Ultimately, volatility creates opportunities, but discipline, risk management and knowing when to take profits are what matter most in options trading.
