put hedges are expensive relative to recent history. The 30-day IV is 21.44% , at the 84.06th percentile , and IV is 1.94× the historical-volatility reference. That means buyers are paying a substantial volatility premium for protection rather than simply paying for expected realized moves.

Using the 2026-12-04 expiry—about 30 days out—with SPY at US$754.35 :

Put strike Moneyness vs. spot Bid–ask Mark premium Approx. cost per 100-share contract Premium as % of SPY spot Breakeven at expiry

750 put 99.42% US$11.84–11.93 US$11.89 ~US$1,189 1.58% US$738.12

730 put 96.77% US$6.88–6.92 US$6.89 ~US$689 0.91% US$723.10

700 put 92.80% US$3.35–3.38 US$3.36 ~US$336 0.45% US$696.64

The same expiry’s option-implied move is about US$45.09 , or 5.98% of spot. Put another way:

A near-ATM 750 put costs 1.58% for roughly one month and only becomes profitable at expiry below US$738.12.

A 730 put lowers the upfront carry materially, but protection does not begin until SPY has already declined by more than 3% from the current price.

A 700 put is cheaper, but functions mainly as tail protection: SPY would need to fall by roughly 7% before the strike itself is reached.

Options activity also leans defensive: put volume was 7.07 million versus 5.37 million calls, for a put/call ratio of 1.12 . That supports the view that demand for downside insurance is elevated.

Bottom line: SPY puts are not cheap at current IV. The premium is particularly high for near-spot protection; moving further out of the money reduces upfront cost but leaves a larger initial decline unhedged. The main risk to a put buyer is volatility normalization or a stable/rising SPY market, which can erode option value even without a large price move. Key items to monitor are IV percentile, IV/HV ratio, and whether SPY’s realized daily moves begin to justify the implied ~6% one-month move.

1.94x IV/HV is rich, but not panic-level rich. The real test is whether realized vol catches up before theta bleeds the 750s.
