Washington Is Taking Equity in Quantum Computing: 9 Companies Get $2B in Government Backing

The U.S. government is becoming a shareholder in the quantum computing industry.

The Commerce Department is putting approximately $2B into nine quantum companies, taking equity stakes in return rather than relying solely on traditional grants.

Here's where the money is going:

🇺🇸 Government Investments

The equity component is significant. Washington is treating quantum computing as a strategic technology with national security implications and a growing competitive dimension with China.

🏦 Big Tech Is Already Positioning for the Quantum Race

Government investment is only part of the story. Major technology companies have been building their own quantum capabilities and backing startups.

  • $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ : Through its venture investment arm, Nvidia has backed Quantinuum, PsiQuantum and QuEra, covering three major quantum hardware approaches.

  • $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ : Partnered with $IBM on quantum-centric supercomputing, combining quantum processors with AMD CPUs and GPUs.

  • $Alphabet(GOOGL)$ : Developing its own Willow quantum chip and investing in QuEra.

  • $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ : Developing the Ocelot quantum chip, operating the Braket quantum cloud service and holding a stake in $IONQ.

  • $Microsoft(MSFT)$ : Developing Majorana-based topological quantum chips.

  • $Honeywell(HON)$ : Owns approximately 52% of Quantinuum.
