Photographer: Qilai Shen/BloombergThe surge in technology stocks that’s caused renewed losses for short sellers this year looks to be running out of steam, encouraging bears to maintain their bets against long-time targets such as Tesla Inc., Apple Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc.Ten of the most-shorted stocks this year delivered almost $17 billion in combined mark-to-market losses for bears through Thursday, according to data-analytics firm S3 Partners. Tesla, which has surged 69% so far in 2023, leads the group by dealing a $7.2 billion blow to traders shorting the stock. The electric-car maker is followed by Nvidia Corp., Apple, Meta, Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The recent pain for short sellers is in contrast to 2022 when combined paper gains from the top 10 bearish bets were $57 billion, according to S3. Investors last year punished the most speculative companies, such as those with elevated price-earnings ratios, as interest-rate hikes sapped the market’s risk appetite.“If you shorted unprofitable names with high PEs you made a lot of money; if you are short right now you are getting squeezed real hard,” said Bob Doll, chief investment officer at Crossmark Global Investments. He’s co-manager of the Steward Equity Market Neutral Fund, which had short positions in more than 80 companies, including software developers Palantir Technologies Inc. and Cloudflare Inc., as of Dec. 31.Tesla has always been a big short-seller target. At the end of last year, it was the most-shorted stock and traders who had bet against it were sitting on paper gains of about $16 billion, according to S3.Things changed this year as appetite returned for the growth and tech stocks that slumped in 2022. The stock has surged this year and the Nasdaq 100 Index flirted with bull-market territory.Yet skeptics say this rally will soon fizzle out, making many highly valued stocks attractive short-seller targets again. The market’s valuation is full, growth drivers at big tech companies have been slowing and their stocks are “still extremely expensive,” said Brad Lamensdorf, a manager of the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF.The Nasdaq 100 trades at 23 times forward earnings, up from about 19 times four months ago, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Meanwhile, results from the largest technology and internet companies showed that Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com and Meta missed estimates by an average of about 8%, according to data from Bank of America.“The risk-reward is very poor in the market, which makes hedging or short selling attractive,” said Lamensdorf.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2285,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9957370685,"gmtCreate":1677045846148,"gmtModify":1677045850290,"author":{"id":"3577873629420463","authorId":"3577873629420463","name":"Geraldkoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb8363738c1f48d8e66f714526ca4268","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577873629420463","authorIdStr":"3577873629420463"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"interest rate all time high? Buffett focuses on buying stakes in wonderful companies at fair prices. Wood bets on disruptive innovators. If we created a Venn diagram of the stocks in these two famous investors' portfolios, there wouldn't be much overlap. However, that doesn't mean there isn't any overlap at all. Here are five stocks both Buffett and Wood own in 2023.1. AmazonBuffett's Berkshire Hathaway owns nearly 10.7 million shares of Amazon. Technically, one of Berkshire's two investment managers -- either Todd Combs or Ted Weschler -- actually made the decision to buy the stock. However, Buffett has expressed regret for not investing in Amazon himself earlier. You might think that Amazon would be in one of Wood's Ark exchange-traded funds focused on top overall technology innovators or next-generation internet. Nope. Only her Ark Space Exploration and Innovation ETF holds a position in Amazon. While Amazon is best known for its e-commerce and cloud hosting businesses, its Project Kuiper plans to offer internet services via satellites.2. BYDBuffett has sold a big chunk of Berkshire Hathaway's stake in BYD. However, the conglomerate still owns 11.9% of the Chinese electric vehicle maker.Wood's Ark Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF also holds a sizable position in BYD. Like Buffett, though, she has sold some shares of the EV maker since the second half of 2022.3. General MotorsBerkshire Hathaway currently owns close to 3.6% of General Motors. That makes it one of the top institutional investors in the U.S. auto giant.Meanwhile, Wood owns a much smaller position in GM. It's the 21st-largest holding in her Ark Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF, ranking three spots behind BYD.4. Nu HoldingsYou might be surprised to find a fintech stock in Buffett's portfolio, especially one that operates in Latin America. However, Nu Holdings is definitely among his holdings. Berkshire Hathaway owns 2.3% of the Brazil-based digital banking provider. Two of Wood's ETFs have positions in Nu Holdings. The stock is the 19th-biggest position in the Ark Fintech Innovation ETF. It's also the smallest holding in the Ark Next Generation Internet ETF.5. StoneCoWait, Buffett owns two Latin American fintech stocks? Yep. In addition to its position in Nu Holdings, Berkshire Hathaway owns 3.4% of StoneCo (STNE 3.38%). The company provides financial technology solutions for small to medium-sized businesses in Brazil.StoneCo is also the 15th-largest holding in Wood's Ark Fintech Innovation ETF. Wood hasn't bought or sold any shares of the fintech company in a while, though. Her last purchase of the stock was made in June 2022.Should you own them, too?The EV market has tremendous growth opportunities, which is no doubt why Buffett and Wood chose to take stakes in BYD and GM. However, competition in that market will also intensify. U.S. investors also have to be aware of the geopolitical risks associated with China if they buy shares of BYD. Still, some investors might find the growth prospects for both stocks and GM's valuation too attractive to ignore. There's a similar story with the Latin American fintech market. Both Nu and StoneCo should be able to deliver strong growth over the next decade and beyond. The main knock against both companies, for now, is that they're not consistently profitable. That alone could be enough to scare some investors away.In my view, Amazon is the best pick of the group. The company still has major growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud hosting. It also continues to expand into new markets such as advertising and healthcare. Amazon is arguably the best Buffett stock to buy in February -- and it could be the best Wood stock to buy right now, too.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"BYDDY":0.9,"AMZN":0.9,"GM":0.9,"NU":0.9,"STNE":0.75}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1877,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9955498614,"gmtCreate":1675649992439,"gmtModify":1676539936761,"author":{"id":"3577873629420463","authorId":"3577873629420463","name":"Geraldkoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb8363738c1f48d8e66f714526ca4268","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577873629420463","authorIdStr":"3577873629420463"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🚀🚀🚀","listText":"🚀🚀🚀","text":"🚀🚀🚀","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9955498614","repostId":"2308464849","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1890,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9955498386,"gmtCreate":1675649615645,"gmtModify":1676539936738,"author":{"id":"3577873629420463","authorId":"3577873629420463","name":"Geraldkoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb8363738c1f48d8e66f714526ca4268","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577873629420463","authorIdStr":"3577873629420463"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🚀🚀","listText":"🚀🚀","text":"🚀🚀","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9955498386","repostId":"1153067265","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1153067265","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1669356122,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1153067265?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-11-25 14:02","market":"us","language":"en","title":"DBS Group: Up Fintech (TIGR) is Inching Back to Profitability in 3Q22","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1153067265","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Investment ThesisStructural growth in online retail brokerage. Non-GAAP net profit, which better reflects the y-o-y trend of improvement of its business, grew 26% to US$6.6m. The earnings improvement was primarily driven by stronger-than expected interest income (+41% y-o-y; +72% q-o-q) amid rate hikes, as (1) its margin lending balance remained relatively stable (est. -7% y-o-y) when compared to the decine in client assets (-37% y-o-y), and(2) deposit income from idle cash became more significant with daily average one-month LIBOR/ HIBOR/ SIBOR rising to 2.5%/ 1.6%2.2% respectively from near zero a year ago. Brokerage commission income declined along with market volume contraction (-27% y-o-y, -13% q-o-q), while cash equities commission fee rate remained largely stable at 6.7bps.

On track in client acquisition and overseas expansion

Tiger added 22.7k new clients during 30, with c.60%/20%/20% from Singapore/ Australia & New Zealand/ Mainland China respectively. Excluding brand building campaigns, which we think are critical to succeed in entering new markets, the metric improved to US$175 (2Q22: US$200). While CAC could fluctuate more after Tiger enters the HK market management expressed that they would adopt a dynamic approach on marketing spend. We believe the incremental benefits from the self-clearing migration of HK stocks ccoo also offset part of the higher cost.

Client satisfaction playing out

Tiger has recorded robust net asset inflow YTD despite the challenging market conditions especially in 3Q. The discussions include plans around multiple facilities in the country, serving different functions across production and the supply chain, one of the people said. A deal hasn’t been signed and the agreement could still fall through, said the people, asking not to be identified as the talks are confidential.More fromBloombergHyperdriveElon Musk’s Tesla Hype Machine Breaks DownMaruti Suzuki Goes Bigger With First Electric SUV to Debut 2025Foreign Carmakers Muscle In on India’s EV Market at Top Car ShowMercedes Enters the Fray for Electric-Vehicle Charging SpotsMusk and representatives for Tesla didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Indonesian Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said talks with Tesla are being led by the coordinating ministry for maritime affairs and investment when asked about the potential deal on Wednesday. A representative for the ministry didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.Indonesia has long courted Tesla, last year striking a $5 billionnickel supplyagreement with the carmaker. In an interview in August with Bloomberg News, President Joko Widodo said the country wants Tesla to make electric cars there, not just batteries, and is willing to take the time to convince Musk to see Indonesia as more than just a supplier of key resources. An Indonesian factory would be Tesla’s third outside its home market in the US, joining facilities in Shanghai and a plant near Berlin. While Indonesia offers a gateway to Southeast Asia’s 675 million consumers, it’s a tough market for global automakers, givenaffordable cars— usually priced below $20,000 — make up the bulk of sales. In China, Tesla earlier this month cut the starting price for it locally built Model Y sport utility vehicle to a new low of 259,900 yuan ($38,360) from 288,900 yuan — about 40% less than the most basic Model Y available in the US. That came after the company deliveredfewer vehiclesthan expected last quarter and missed its goal of 50% annual sales growth.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1555,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9922161284,"gmtCreate":1671719718249,"gmtModify":1676538581664,"author":{"id":"3577873629420463","authorId":"3577873629420463","name":"Geraldkoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb8363738c1f48d8e66f714526ca4268","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577873629420463","authorIdStr":"3577873629420463"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I am hurt","listText":"I am hurt","text":"I am hurt","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9922161284","repostId":"2293285346","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2293285346","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1671696064,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2293285346?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-22 16:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Down Almost 30% This Month, Is Tesla Stock a Buy?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2293285346","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The stock has been absolutely hammered.","content":"
\n
KEY POINTSFollowing the stock's nosedive, an opportunistic purchase of Tesla shares may make sense. The electric car maker's management team expects strong growth in vehicle deliveries in the years ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; This decline adds to an already brutal year for the stock, bringing Tesla shares' total year-to-date return to a loss of more than 60%. Ouch. This begs the question: Has the stock become oversold, creating a buying opportunity for investors?Let's take a look.Business momentumWhile the electric car maker's stock has been slammed this year, the underlying business is doing quite well. Tesla's third-quarter vehicle deliveries, for instance, rose 42% year over year. Growth was impressive sequentially, too; Tesla's record third-quarter deliveries of 343,830 were up from deliveries of 254,695 in the second quarter. What about demand for its vehicles? Demand for vehicles that will be shipped in the final quarter of the year is \"excellent,\" according to comments from Tesla CEO Elon Musk in the company's fourth-quarter earnings call. Indeed, demand is trending so well that Musk said the company expects to \"sell every car that we make for as far in the future as we can see.\"The company's vehicle production is also going well, with Tesla management saying in the company's third-quarter earnings call that it achieved a production volume of 2,000 cars per week at its new factory in Germany. Its new factory in Texas should hit this same milestone soon, management added. Meanwhile, production at the company's factory in Fremont, California hit record levels during the period. Finally, the company is doing well, too. Free cash flow was $3.3 billion during Q3, up 148% year over year. Bolstering its balance sheet is $21.1 billion of cash and marketable securities, up $2.2 billion sequentially.ValuationWith momentum like this, investors should expect Tesla stock to look cheap -- and it doesn't (at least at first glance). Shares trade at about 42 times earnings. This premium prices in significant earnings growth going forward. But the premium is arguably reasonable, if not too low, relative to management's long-term growth expectations and considering two major catalysts the company has in the works for 2023 and beyond. Tesla's long-term view for its business, which it lays out in the outlook section of its quarterly letters to shareholders, is that the company can grow vehicle deliveries at an average rate of about 50% annually over \"a multi-year horizon...\" And based on the company's execution in recent years, this may be possible.Strong growth next year also seems likely when investors consider two big catalysts for the business: The expected launch of Tesla's Cybertruck next year, and the company's explosive growth in its energy storage business. Is it time to buy?Tesla stock's valuation is starting to look attractive in the context of the business's underlying momentum. While it's always possible that growth doesn't pan out as expected (particularly in the near term as macroeconomic uncertainty potentially leads to some consumers delaying vehicle purchases), the company's recent growth and its exciting product pipeline make a good case for the stock.Sure, there are always risks to owning the notoriously volatile stock, but it may make sense to make Tesla shares a small percentage of your portfolio at this price.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2055,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9077862636,"gmtCreate":1658493435025,"gmtModify":1676536167279,"author":{"id":"3577873629420463","authorId":"3577873629420463","name":"Geraldkoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb8363738c1f48d8e66f714526ca4268","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577873629420463","authorIdStr":"3577873629420463"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Go go go to the moon !
