Both have disproportionately affected the technology sector, with some of the largest tech companies in the U.S. opting for stock splits to reduce their high share prices, and the Nasdaq-100 tech index bearing the brunt of the broader market losses.Palo Alto Networks, Shopify, and Tesla have all conducted stock splits this year, and each stock has touched its 52-week low within the last four months. Still, Wall Street analysts are quite bullish on all three, which begs the question: Should you follow Wall Street's lead and buy the dip on these stock split stocks?Palo Alto Networks is a global leader in cybersecurityAnthony Di Pizio (Palo Alto Networks): Palo Alto Networks' stock price hit a 52-week low of $140.52 in May, and while it has since bounced to $184.37, Wall Street investment bank Morgan Stanley is betting it could soar to $274.33. That represents an upside of 49% from where it trades today. If it gets there, that would also be a tidy gain of 95% from its 52-week low.Why is Morgan Stanley so bullish? Well, Palo Alto recently reported an incredibly strong financial performance for its fiscal 2022, which ended July 31, even in the face of the economic slowdown. Its $5.5 billion in revenue was a 29% jump compared to its fiscal 2021. What's more, Palo Alto's remaining performance obligations soared by 40% to $8.2 billion, which suggests a revenue growth acceleration might be on the horizon.This is all because cybersecurity isn't something companies want -- it's something they absolutely need. As businesses shift more of their operations online using cloud technology, their attack surface continues to grow, which means they need more intuitive forms of protection for their valuable digital assets. In fact, a recent survey of company leaders conducted by Morgan Stanley suggested that organizations would have almost no appetite for cutting back on cybersecurity spending, even during a recession.Since Palo Alto is an industry leader in 11 cybersecurity categories, it's no surprise it has a huge roster of large customers. At the end of its fiscal 2022, 1,240 of its clients were spending $1 million or more annually on its products and services.Management's guidance for fiscal 2023 points to more strength, with revenue expected to rise by as much as 25% to $6.9 billion. While that would be a marginal slowdown compared to fiscal 2022's growth rate, it's still significantly faster than the cybersecurity industry's growth rate of 14%.Shopify could lead the e-commerce recoveryJamie Louko (Shopify): RBC Capital's Paul Treiber has put a 12-month price target of $60 on Shopify, implying 101% growth from Shopify's 52-week low of $29.84. This is undoubtedly optimistic, and it would constitute a stellar performance.There are a few reasons Treiber might be so bullish. First, Shopify has plummeted, bringing what was once a highly valued stock down to a relatively low valuation. It trades at 8.3 times sales -- nearly its lowest valuation since going public in 2015. Right now, shares of Shopify are also trading closer to its all-time low valuation than to its average multiple over its life as a public company.Shopify has experienced some short-term pain, but its long-term future still looks bright. Recession fears have spooked investors about the e-commerce space, and that makes sense: As consumer budgets tighten, shoppers will likely spend less on discretionary goods like those sold by many e-commerce merchants. That said, the long-term future of e-commerce adoption looks good. By 2024, e-commerce is expected to represent 22% of global retail sales. That's an increase from 18% in 2020.Considering that Shopify is one of the leading platforms for small businesses to create and grow their online operations, the company is well-placed to capitalize on that expected expansion. Millions of businesses worldwide use its platform, and Shopify merchants accounted for more than 10% of all U.S. retail e-commerce sales in 2021. Shopify facilitated almost $47 billion in gross merchandise volume in the second quarter of 2022 alone.Treiber also might like Shopify because of its high switching costs. The company offers nearly everything a merchant might need, from point-of-sale solutions to payment processing to capital loans. It has even started offering fulfillment services, where Shopify handles all the shipping and returns logistics for its merchants. Once a client begins to rely on all these tools, it can be tough to leave the ecosystem. An actual put option is a financial derivative that gives the holder the right but not the obligation to sell the underlying asset at a set level, known as the strike price, serving as an insurance policy against a market decline.</p><p>Some economists and analysts have even suggested the Fed should welcome or even aim for market losses, which could serve to tighten financial conditions as investors scale back spending.</p><p>William Dudley, the former president of the New York Fed, argued earlier this year that the central bank won’t get a handle on inflation that’s running near a 40-year high unless they make investors suffer. “It’s hard to know how much the Federal Reserve will need to do to get inflation under control,” wrote Dudley in a Bloomberg column in April. “But one thing is certain: to be effective, it’ll have to inflict more losses on stock and bond investors than it has so far.”</p><p>Some market participants aren’t convinced. Aoifinn Devitt, chief investment officer at Moneta,said the Fed likely sees stock-market volatility as a byproduct of its efforts to tighten monetary policy, not an objective.</p><p>“They recognize that stocks can be collateral damage in a tightening cycle,” but that doesn’t mean that stocks “have to collapse,” Devitt said.</p><p>The Fed, however, is prepared to tolerate seeing markets decline and the economy slow and even tip into recession as it focuses on taming inflation, she said.</p><p>The Federal Reserve held the fed funds target rate at a range of 0% to 0.25% between 2008 and 2015, as it dealt with the financial crisis and its aftermath. QQQ shows the P/E ratio from June 30, 2022, and we should be in that same neighborhood considering where the market is.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c9951a8c5cc7ed1cb52e2fa6aa3a101b\" tg-width=\"445\" tg-height=\"363\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Invesco</p><p>That P/E ratio is computed, as always, by excluding the unprofitable companies. Most of the time, it is understated. The top 10 holdings look even worse overall from a valuation standpoint. Looking at Apple Inc. (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN) and Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) gives readers an idea of what we are talking about.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aaf564be0f74deccef5e301196fa2d74\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"852\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>AAPL PE Ratio</p><p>data by YCharts</p><p>QQQX should be in the same neighborhood on account of its overlap with QQQ. But even the 28, if taken at face value, is not remotely compatible with the current environment. We have two main issues here. First, the probability of recession is close to 90% in the next 12 months. That is of course our opinion, and we could be wrong. But that opinion makes us believe that earnings will contract and will contract hard. So that 28 likely becomes at least 35 when all is said and done. The second aspect here is that real yields (nominal yields minus inflation expectations) are rising briskly. Historically, when you get better real returns in cash and bonds, P/E multiples contract. You can see the recent relationship of this over here.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ac237475a3c929b93c5cefbafcd4af9b\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"674\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Now envision a scenario where we are right about earnings contracting 20% and the multiple contracting another 30%. What do you get? You get blown apart.</p><p>Despite the drop we have had, we think QQQ and QQQX can fall another 50% from here before we bottom. This might not be, and actually most likely won't be, a straight line. We will have rallies and premature celebrations all the way down, but ultimately we think QQQ could hit $150-$190.00 and QQQX could hit $12.00-$15.00</p><p><b>One Versus The Other</b></p><p>Income chasers might be upset that we have pretty much lumped QQQX with QQQ. That is the reality for the most part, the two track each other. You saw the chart off the June bottom, which we posted above. The shorter-dated options sold by QQQX generally don't provide much downside protection and very often, rob investors of large upside on countertrend rallies.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c37a917dacdffb7aa7b0e6fb67fded16\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"163\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NUVEEN -QQQX</p><p>Overall, QQQX likely does better on a total return standpoint, but it won't be something you are going to write home about.</p><p><b>Verdict</b></p><p>QQQX has that large distribution going for it.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5039fcddd31ca3277b12779442883cdb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"263\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>NUVEEN -QQQX</p><p>That distribution won't mean much if total returns are poor. It won't mean much if you have a permanent capital loss, which we believe you will from this point. Finally, distributions can only be generated based on how high volatility is and how many dollars are backing each share.</p><p>So if we are right about NAV moving to $12-$15 for QQQX, you should expect 30%-50% less distributions. If we get the 30%-50% drop and then the NASDAQ and QQQX take a few months forming a bottom with low volatility, you can expect further cuts to distributions. Berkshire's investments in HP (NYSE: HPQ) and Citigroup (NYSE: C) have also been discussed extensively in the investing community.While these have been the headline investments Berkshire Hathaway has made during this year's market downturn, of the new stocks added to Berkshire's closely watched stock portfolio in 2022, my top pick is one that has largely flown under the radar.Here's my favorite out of Berkshire's newest stock positionsIn the first quarter of 2022, Berkshire Hathaway added just over 420,000 shares of specialty insurance company Markel to its portfolio. In the second quarter, Berkshire's stake was increased to 467,611 shares worth $605 million – roughly 3.5% of the company's outstanding shares.To be sure, we don't know if Buffett himself was behind this move, or if one of his investment managers, Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, initiated the position in Markel. After all, when it comes to investments in the tens of billions of dollars, we can be quite sure Buffett had personal involvement, but for Berkshire's standards, a $600 million investment is small and could have come from one of the others.Having said that, Markel is a perfect fit for Buffett's investment style. For one thing, Buffett loves insurance. Berkshire Hathaway itself is an insurance company at heart, with Buffett having built Berkshire into its current state by using the float from GEICO and Berkshire's other insurance operations to acquire businesses and common stocks.Buffett also loves companies that operate in profitable niches, and Markel certainly qualifies. Markel primarily operates in the specialty insurance business (known as excess and surplus in insurance terms), and has an excellent track record of underwriting profitability.A mini-Berkshire with a key advantagePerhaps most significantly, Markel is one of the few insurance companies in the world that uses Buffett's approach to its investment strategy.If you're not familiar, insurance companies make their money in two main ways – underwriting and investing. On the underwriting side, Markel's combined ratio, which is its operating expenses plus claims paid as a percentage of premiums collected, has averaged 95.5% over the past 10 years. This means that Markel' underwriting profit margin has been 4.5%.This may sound low, but underwriting is typically a secondary source of profits for insurers. The bulk of most insurance companies' profits comes from investing the float, or the premiums collected but not yet paid out for claims.In most cases, insurers invest their float into safe income-generating instruments, such as Treasury securities and corporate bonds. The main factor behind this has been a spate of analyst upgrades for shares in the China-based electric vehicle (EV) maker.Confidence is rising again that the company’s production ramp-up will result in a big jump in sales for the rest of 2022, and going into 2023. Yet before you decide to jump in, and chase its recent rally, it’s hardly a lock that results in the coming quarter will live up to today’s elevated hopes.The ramp-up may still fail to produce results in line with expectations. This may cause the stock to give back recent gains. In the long term, Nio’s global expansion could also fall short of expectations. With high growth heavily priced in, it may not take much for today’s renewed bullishness to reverse.Why NIO Stock Has Surged Post-EarningsNio may have beat on revenue for the second quarter, but the results were hardly much to get excited about. As expected, China’s pandemic shutdowns continued to decelerate growth, on a year-over-year basis, and especially on a sequential basis.Even worse, the EV maker reported a higher-than-expected net loss. Compared to the prior year’s quarter, net losses per share were up 316.4%. Still, instead of reacting negatively to Q2 results, the market focused instead on the company’s outlook for Q3, which calls for a speeding back up of growth.This resulted in a slight uptick for NIO stock right after earnings but analyst upgrades sent shares soaring. As InvestorPlace’s Eddie Pan reported Sep 12, two analysts (Deutsche Bank’s Edison Yu, and BofA’s Ming-Hsun Lee) have reiterated their “buy” ratings, and have upped their price targets.Both analysts are bullish deliveries will re-accelerate considerably during Q4. This is due to a combination of the production ramp-up, plus Nio’s launch of new vehicle models. Yet while the situation may be improving, it may not be to the extent implied by the stock’s latest spike.How Its Latest Uptick Could ReverseAs buzz returns to NIO stock, it may seem that now’s the time to buy, ahead of a continued comeback. Unfortunately, there’s a lot to suggest that its latest surge may be short-lived in nature. With its move back above $20 per share, the market has now priced in a possible growth re-acceleration as a near-certainty.For the stock to keep moving higher, or at the very least avoid moving lower, Nio needs to both hit its own Q3 deliveries projection, plus hit Q4 numbers in line with the sell side’s expectations. Hitting its Q3 target may be attainable. Its monthly delivery numbers since June have come in above 10,000. Q4, though, may be a taller order.In order to meet Edison Yu’s 2022 estimate, Nio needs to deliver 57,000 vehicles between October and December. That’s nearly double projected Q3 deliveries.With increased production, new models, and Chinese government incentives, this may seem like a cinch. However, other factors, like China’s economic slowdown, could somewhat counter these positives.In turn, causing delivery numbers for the months ahead to fall short of expectations. Even if it’s a near miss, it may cause the stock to give back its recent gains.The Verdict on NIO StockNio stock earns a D rating in my Portfolio Grader. Beyond pulling back in the short term, shares could also keep performing poorly in the coming years. Long-term bulls believe high growth will continue. Even as growth in its home market returns, they are confident international expansion will keep it in high-growth mode.But only time will tell whether its first big expansion overseas (in Europe) proves successful. It may face greater competition in the China market. In Europe, it faces not just market leader Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), but competition from incumbent European luxury brands as well.Failure in Europe may result in it scrapping its North American expansion plans.
