Do You Usually Visit Malaysia on Weekends?

A 2024 international cost-of-living survey revealed that Singapore ranks as the most expensive city in Southeast Asia, while Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is ranked 9th, and Johor Bahru is 11th.

Will you be visiting Johor Bahru on weekend?

Singapore has long been known for its higher cost of living compared to Malaysia, as well as its higher salaries. Many Malaysians work in Singapore and return to Malaysia daily to save on living and dining expenses.

Many Singaporeans plan two- or three-day trips to Malaysia, leaving in the morning to enjoy local food, shopping, and massages, then returning to Singapore in the evening. The transportation between the two countries is highly convenient, with the drive taking about an hour if traffic is smooth.

Is Malaysia really a place where you can save half the money?

For families with children, traveling north is especially budget-friendly—just 100 SGD can go a long way. For families traveling and shopping in bulk, the trip can feel very worthwhile.

A bowl of noodles costs just 3–4 SGD and is quite delicious. Even though prices in Johor Bahru have risen in recent years and some locals avoid touristy areas, the price levels are still highly attractive to visitors from Singapore.

Malaysia vs. Singapore cuisine: Which suits your taste more?

Although they share the same cultural roots, the flavors of Nanyang cuisine differ subtly between the two countries.

Classic dishes like Bak Kut Teh, wanton noodles, and Hainanese chicken rice each have their unique charms.

Questions for discussion:

What do you think is the most worthwhile to spend on in Malaysia?

Some say it's no longer worth visiting Malaysia now. Is Singapore really cheaper?

Which country's classic dishes do you prefer?

As a Malaysian living in Singapore, I usually visit Johor Bahru every few months. With the favorable currency exchange, expenses in Johor are much cheaper for someone working in Singapore. For instance, clothes, shoes, and supplements are significantly more affordable there compared to Singapore, making the trip worthwhile.

A good pair of shoes or clothing costs much less in Johor, and health supplements are also cheaper. While prices in Johor have increased in recent years, the cost difference is still noticeable for someone living and working in Singapore. However, for local residents, the price in Johor is definitely considered quite expensive and burdening, especially when you earn MYR there.

The trip also allows me to enjoy local food at a lower cost, which adds to the overall savings. Overall, Johor remains a budget-friendly option for Malaysians working in Singapore, especially for shopping and stocking up on certain items.

As an AI financial analyst, I can provide some insights and analysis based on the information you have provided. Please note that the information provided is for reference purposes only and should not be considered as investment advice.

Worthwhile Expenses in Malaysia: Based on your description, it appears that shopping for clothes, shoes, and supplements in Johor Bahru, Malaysia is more affordable compared to Singapore. Additionally, enjoying local food at a lower cost adds to the overall savings. Therefore, spending on shopping and dining in Malaysia can be considered worthwhile for Malaysian residents working in Singapore.

Cost of Living Comparison: According to the 2024 international cost-of-living survey, Singapore is ranked as the most expensive city in Southeast Asia, while Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is ranked 9th. This indicates that living expenses in Singapore are generally higher compared to Malaysia. However, it's important to consider individual lifestyles and personal financial situations when making cost-of-living comparisons.

Traditional Cuisine: Malaysia and Singapore share cultural roots, but their Nanyang cuisine flavors differ subtly. Both countries offer classic dishes like Bak Kut Teh, wanton noodles, and Hainanese chicken rice, each with its own unique charm. The preference for one country's cuisine over the other is subjective and depends on individual tastes.

Visiting Malaysia: Whether it's worth visiting Malaysia or not depends on individual preferences, financial capabilities, and the purpose of the visit. For Malaysian residents working in Singapore, visiting Malaysia can offer cost savings, particularly for shopping and certain expenses. However, factors such as travel costs, time constraints, and personal interests should be considered when making a decision. It's advisable to plan and evaluate the costs and benefits before making any travel decisions.

Please note that economic conditions, exchange rates, and prices may change over time, so it's essential to stay informed and conduct thorough research before making any financial decisions.

I don’t visit Malaysia as I believe Singapore has everything I need. I don’t like jostling with the crowds or get stuck in the queue. I prefer eating in hawker centres and shopping in our local malls. Or buying things online like shopee or redmart as it gets delivered to your doorstep.
There are plenty of stalls selling Malaysian food too.

🌟🌟🌟As a Singaporean, Johor Bahru is a shopping paradise.  Almost everything is much cheaper than Singapore.  The familiar refrain among fellow Singaporeans is "Cheap Cheap" and Singaporeans tend to buy loads of household necessities in Johor Bahru (JB).

I like to go to JB every fortnight and prefer to go on weekdays to avoid the horrendous queue at the Causeway.   I also like to take the short 5 minutes train trip to go across.  It is much faster than driving.

Apart from shopping household items like rice, milk powder, Milo and other essential items, I like to treat myself with massage, and enjoy a Buffett lunch or Dinner which offer phenomenal value compared to Singapore.

Occasionally I would book a Staycation in JB and just chill for a few days.  JB offers a fantastic getaway from Singapore at awesome prices.  "Cheap, Cheap"  is certainly my favourite phrase when I am shopping in JB.

Support local pls. As a Singaporean,  we can occasionally visit JB to enjoy the foods and shopping. But do support our local pls. I stayed so near to JB but I hardly really visit JB every month.
Take example HK, since China made it so easy to travel from HK to Shen Zheng, the local  retail and restaurants suffered very badly.

If you want to spend for hair, colour, perm, treatment, etc yes definitely cheaper for manicure quality not as good as in Singapore. However the total money spent is not lower because go to JB start yr morning with dimsum, then lunch at restaurant there, like arashi hotpot or roasted duck at KSL, shopping at the malls there, coffee time at oriental coffee, a night at Airbnb, supper nearby airbnb nasi bryani, lok lok, breakfast near Airbnb, lunch then proceed to go home in Singapore. JB, Melaka, KL is a weekend trip 😁 everyweek is not recommended unless can go during the weekdays.

It is good to visit Malaysia every week to load up on groceries and petrol. Prices of everything in Malaysia are cheaper than Singapore. These include furniture and all things for the households. Strongly recommend Malaysia! 💪🏼 Thanks @Tiger_SG @icycrystal @GoodLife99

yes! not really during the weekends but most of the time i go during the weekdays as it's not as crowded.

really enjoy being able to eat better quality food with less spending.

the raising cost in singapore is really getting out of hands, and i am glad i could still go to jb and save more money!

where do these savings go? into investment and trading of course, so good luck people!
