🇸🇬 MAS October Policy Review — An Investor's Briefing

The one-liner: No change, but still on the hawkish side — the SGD keeps grinding stronger to pre-empt inflation, with clearer relief expected from mid-2027.

📌 What did MAS do?

  • Policy on hold: The rate of appreciation of the S$NEER policy band is unchanged — no change to the band's width or centre.

  • Context: In July, MAS had nudged the pace of appreciation up "very slightly"; this round, it's staying patient.

  • Where the SGD sits: The S$NEER has strengthened modestly, trading in the upper half of the appreciating band.

📈 Growth: The AI engine is still humming

  • Q3 GDP: +5.4% y-o-y, +1.1% q-o-q seasonally adjusted (a touch slower than Q2).

  • Tech-related sectors are the star — global AI investment is powering regional industrial production and trade, with strong orders and expanding capacity.

  • Construction, financial services and real estate remain firm; consumer-facing segments are a bit soft.

  • Outlook: Steady growth near term, with the AI cycle expected to moderate in H2 2027. This year's positive output gap should narrow through next year.

💸 Inflation: Warm now, cooling later

MAS Core Inflation

1.5–2.0%

1.5–2.5%

CPI-All Items

Elevated on energy, food & transport costs

~2.0%

1.5–2.5%

  • Why it's warm: Energy prices have risen anew since September; electricity & gas tariffs stepped up; food and transport services inflation are climbing.

  • Why it cools: Supply disruptions in energy and food should ease, productivity gains keep services unit labour costs contained, and enhanced healthcare/education subsidies will suppress services inflation.

  • Key inflection: Core inflation is expected to ease more discernibly from mid-2027.

⚠️ How are the risks tilted?

  • To the upside: A sharp, sustained surge in energy/food prices could push import costs above forecast; an AI-boom spillover into wages could keep domestic inflation stickier.

  • To the downside: Higher-than-expected interest rates or a sharp AI investment pullback could drag growth and inflation; faster Middle East energy supply recovery could pull prices down more.

🎯 What it means for your portfolio

  1. A firmer SGD regime persists — the policy band is still on an appreciating path, preserving the currency "moat" for SGD deposits and SGD-denominated bonds.

  2. No near-term policy pivot — with inflation only clearly easing from mid-2027, MAS isn't in a hurry to step off the brake.

  3. Two themes to watch: AI-linked supply chains (still strong near term) and the H2 2027 cycle inflection.

  4. Next checkpoint: METI releases official GDP forecasts for 2026–2027 in November.

I see MAS staying on the hawkish side as a prudent move, especially with energy, food and transport costs putting renewed pressure on inflation. A stronger SGD helps cushion imported inflation, although it also means exporters may face some headwinds.

I remain cautiously optimistic about Singapore’s growth, particularly with AI-related investment supporting manufacturing, trade and technology supply chains. However, I will be watching whether this momentum can sustain into 2027, as consumer-facing sectors remain softer and the AI investment cycle may eventually moderate.

For my portfolio, I will continue balancing growth opportunities with stability, while keeping an eye on SGD strength and interest-rate trends. I would rather stay disciplined and focus on quality businesses than chase short-term momentum. The key is whether earnings growth can remain strong when inflation finally cools from mid-2027.

    3 Two themes to watch

Singapore’s latest MAS decision highlights a crucial point: a stronger currency does not automatically mean a stronger economy.

With Q3 GDP growing 5.4% year-on-year, AI investment supports manufacturing and trade. However, core inflation has rebounded to 2.1%, while higher energy and transport costs threaten household purchasing power.

The bigger story is the balancing act. A stronger SGD helps Singapore import goods more cheaply, but can make exports less competitive. For investors holding US stocks, currency movements add another layer of risk: even when share prices rise, USD gains may translate into smaller SGD returns.

My focus would be whether AI-driven growth remains sustainable and inflation genuinely cools in 2027. If AI investment slows while borrowing costs remain elevated, Singapore could face weaker growth without immediate inflation relief.
