Big Tech Earnings Will Test the Returns on AI Spending
The market: technology shares await earnings and the Federal Reserve
The $Invesco QQQ(QQQ)$ slipped 0.01 per cent to US$704.40 on Friday, while the $S&P 500(.SPX)$ fell 0.52 per cent to US$759.97. After the previous session's sharp technology sell-off, the indices did not immediately choose a new direction. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Intel and several storage companies report between Wednesday and Thursday, while the Federal Reserve decision is due at 2am Beijing time on 29 October. Earnings, cash flow and interest rates will all reset the value assigned to AI assets within a narrow window.
The prevailing expectation is for the Federal Reserve to keep its 3.75 per cent to 4.00 per cent target range unchanged. Investors are therefore more likely to focus on what the press conference says about inflation, employment and the December policy path. An unchanged rate removes one possible surprise; it does not answer when AI spending becomes cash.
Big Tech earnings: revenue growth must be judged alongside capital expenditure
$Microsoft(MSFT)$ and $Alphabet(GOOG)$ report after the close on Wednesday. The average estimates are roughly US$4.82 in earnings per share and US$92.49 billion in revenue for Microsoft, followed by US$3.11 and US$132.02 billion for Alphabet. Amazon reports after the close on Thursday, with expectations near US$2.00 per share and US$206.29 billion in revenue.
These reports cannot be judged on revenue beats alone. Growth at Azure, Google Cloud and AWS needs to be compared with capital expenditure, operating cash flow and free cash flow. Meta's latest results already supplied the warning: advertising revenue remained strong, but quarterly capital expenditure exceeded operating cash flow and free cash flow was negative at US$2.12 billion. The market dealt with the cash gap rather than allowing revenue growth to obscure the spending burden.
Existing businesses can help fund the build-out: Microsoft has software cash flow, Alphabet has search and advertising, and Amazon also has retail and advertising. Their advantage is not an absence of investment; it is the possibility of paying for investment from operations. The results need to show that customers are increasing AI usage and that cash generation is not being left behind by construction. Management guidance is not the same as signed orders, and higher capital expenditure does not guarantee that future revenue will grow at the same rate.
Storage earnings: HBM, NAND and hard drives are separate tests
Storage results arrive in stages. Seagate and SK hynix report first on Tuesday, followed by SanDisk after the close on Thursday. Revenue expectations are roughly US$4.18 billion for Seagate and US$10.85 billion for SanDisk. On Friday, $Micron Technology(MU)$ gained 2.46 per cent and $SK hynix(SKHY)$ rose 4.05 per cent, while $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ fell 1.82 per cent. That divergence shows that investors are not treating every storage company as the same business.
$SK hynix(SKHY)$ and Micron are closer to HBM and DRAM demand, Seagate primarily tests high-capacity hard drives, and SanDisk must answer questions about NAND and enterprise SSD pricing, inventory and margins. AI servers can support all of these products, but their supply cycles, customer structures and contract prices differ. Tight HBM supply does not prove that NAND inventory is healthy, nor does it guarantee a simultaneous improvement in hard-drive margins. This week's results need to show how far demand has spread and which company can retain higher prices in gross profit and cash flow.
The Federal Reserve: Treasury yields will shape technology valuations
Technology companies can use earnings to prove growth, while the Federal Reserve influences the price investors will pay for growth that lies further ahead. If the policy message remains neutral and yields do not resume their climb, stronger cloud growth and cash flow have more room to support a technology rebound. If the press conference reinforces inflation risk or expectations of December tightening, even an earnings beat may remain under pressure from a higher discount rate.
That is why this week's results must be read together. Cloud companies determine whether AI spending has a revenue outlet. Storage companies show whether orders are reaching the hardware chain. The Federal Reserve affects what those future cash flows are worth today. Progress on one line can still be offset by deterioration on another.
Bloom: record revenue, but free cash flow remained negative
$Bloom Energy Corp(BE)$ fell another 11.24 per cent to US$193.30 on Friday. The company had reported record quarterly revenue of US$1.2358 billion, non-GAAP earnings of US$0.94 per share and higher full-year guidance, but free cash flow was still negative at US$181 million. Strong revenue did not stop the decline because investors were also weighing expansion, working capital and valuation.
Bloom is not a direct comparison for the cloud and storage companies reporting this week, but it shows the three measures investors are using. Revenue growth tests demand, gross margin tests pricing power, and free cash flow shows whether growth still requires repeated external funding. The strongest report this week may not be the company with the largest revenue beat. It may be the one that moves revenue, capital expenditure and cash returns in the same direction.

💬 【Talking Point】
If Big Tech beats revenue expectations but raises capital expenditure again, would you read that as strength or as a warning?

Invesco QQQ (QQQ)
watchlist
is a renewed AI/mega-cap technology sell-off , accompanied by a sharp rise in crude oil prices. A 2026-10-23 market report noted that Meta’s quarterly results helped trigger weakness in the AI trade while oil surged, pressuring the Nasdaq complex.
Tiger News
Why it matters for QQQ:
QQQ is highly concentrated in large technology and AI-linked companies:
NVIDIA (NVDA)
watchlist
and
Apple (AAPL)
watchlist
each account for about 8% of the fund, followed by
Microsoft (MSFT)
watchlist
at about 6%.
That concentration means concern over AI spending, cloud-demand returns, or higher inflation/rates from energy prices can transmit quickly to the ETF rather than remaining a single-stock issue.
The latest available quote shows QQQ at US$704.40 in the prior regular session, with pre-market pricing at US$707.95 on 2026-10-26. The nearby quoted support and resistance levels were US$691.62 and US$727.01 , respectively.
I did not find
That spending is already turning free cash flow negative at Meta and Alphabet, pushing others toward debt and equity raises. In my view, this isn’t disciplined investment anymore—it’s an arms race testing the market’s limits. Investors will tolerate delayed ROI only so long. Power shortages, soaring component costs and fuzzy monetization paths are flashing yellow lights.
Strong results might buy more time. Anything less, and the market could finally demand proof that this trillion-dollar bet actually pays off.
