While Google Cloud’s 103% growth proves strong enterprise demand for Gemini and custom TPU infrastructure, market focus has pivoted from top-line expansion to capital discipline.
Alphabet’s $51.4B in capex dragged quarterly free cash flow into negative territory (-$9.07B). When combined with an $8.7B investment mark-to-market drag and an EPS miss ($2.12 vs. $2.94–$3.02 consensus), Wall Street’s knee-jerk selloff is understandable. Unlike Microsoft—which absorbed $45.2B in capex while maintaining $18.6B in positive free cash flow—Google faces a tougher narrative surrounding its cash conversion efficiency and long-term search margin defense.
Rather than catching a falling knife immediately after a 10%+ drop, waiting for free cash flow stabilization and clearer signals on search monetization offers a far better risk-reward profile before building a full position.
