INTC Earnings Preview | It Needs to Hold 90 to Keep Rising
Core view:
Intel's basics look strong, but the stock has already priced in some good news. After earnings, first watch whether $90 holds. Only a break above $95 gives it a chance at $100. If it breaks below $89.7, watch for a bigger drop.
1. Volatility Range Pricing
Intel is around $93, above its 10-day average of $91 and 200-day average of $87, but still below its 20-day average of $99. That means short-term recovery, but medium-term upside pressure. Its 60-week average of $71 is a longer-term trend reference.
The options market prices this week's implied move at about ±9.91%, a range of about $78–96. IV is 68.24%, with an IV percentile of 45.42%. That means volatility isn't at an extreme historic high, but IV can still drop fast after earnings and pressure option prices.
Trading watch points: $95–100 is important upside resistance. $89.7–90 is the key downside defense zone. If the stock breaks outside the implied range, the actual move is bigger than the market originally priced.
2. Gamma Analysis
INTC is at $92.67, above the Gamma flip point of $89.7. Current net GEX is about +$19.3M / 1%, in positive Gamma territory. If the earnings reaction is mild, the stock may chop between $90–95.
On the upside, $95 is the near-term Call wall. $100 has about 27K Call open interest, a major resistance. Only after a break above that would we look at $105. On the downside, $89.7 is the key flip level. If it breaks, watch $88, $85, and $80.
Max pain at $94 may pull price toward it, but an earnings gap can break the existing Gamma structure.
3. Basics Analysis
According to HSBC forecasts, Intel's Q3 revenue is about $17.008B, above the $16.386B consensus. Q4 is forecast at about $18.262B, also above the $16.929B consensus.
After earnings, the market is focused on three things:
-
Server CPU demand: AI is driving data center demand. Can the DCAI business keep growing and offset weak PC business?
-
Foundry and advanced packaging: Can 18A process customer progress and EMIB-T packaging partnerships turn into real orders and revenue?
-
Supply chain and margins: Substrate and packaging capacity is still tight. Can locking in supply early improve delivery without raising costs and hurting margins?
Key to the market reaction: Even if revenue beats, the stock can still fall if Q4 guidance isn't strong enough or foundry progress misses expectations.
4. Three Post-Earnings Scenarios and Possible Responses
These are teaching examples based on the current price around $93 and key technical levels. Strikes are only to show strategy structure. Whether contracts are listed, premiums, and breakevens all need to be checked separately.
Scenario 1: Range-bound ($88–97)
Earnings roughly meet expectations. Server CPU growth is steady, but there's no major new positive to drive the stock. IV falls, and the stock chops around $90–95.
Example strategy: Iron Condor
-
Sell 85 Put $INTC 20261030 85.0 PUT$ , buy 80 Put
-
Sell 100 Call, buy 105 Call
This uses post-earnings IV drop and time decay. If the stock stays between $85–100, the strategy may benefit. Max gain still depends on the actual net premium collected.
Risk: An earnings gap beyond the sold strikes can cause losses. The bought protection legs limit max risk.
Scenario 2: Break above $97, challenge $100–105
Bullish scenario. Server CPU demand and Q4 guidance beat expectations, and the foundry business makes new progress. If the stock breaks $95 and $97 and holds $100, it may attract more chasing.
Example strategy: Bull Call Spread
-
Buy 100 Call
-
Sell 105 Call
Both legs use the same expiration. This fits a view that the stock still has upside but you want to limit cost. If the stock is above $105 at expiration, the spread reaches max intrinsic value.
Alternative: Bull Put Spread
-
Sell 95 Put
-
Buy 90 Put
This fits a scenario where the stock pulls back to $95 after a breakout and stabilizes, with premium income as the main goal.
Risk: A post-earnings IV drop can offset some Call gains. If the breakout fails, both spreads can lose.
Scenario 3: Break below $88, test $85–80
Bearish scenario. Earnings or Q4 guidance miss, server CPU growth slows, or foundry progress falls short of market hopes. If the stock breaks the Gamma Flip at $89.7 and loses $88, it may speed up toward $85 and $80.
Example strategy: Bear Put Spread
-
Buy 85 Put
-
Sell 80 Put
This fits a view that the stock may keep falling toward $80, without paying the full cost of buying a Put alone.
Alternative: Bear Call Spread
-
Sell 95 Call
-
Buy 100 Call
If the stock breaks $88 and can't get back above $95 on a bounce, this limited-risk seller spread can play continued weakness.
Risk: A fast rebound after bad news is out can hurt bearish strategies. If IV drops a lot, bought Puts can also come under pressure.
5. Final Take
Before earnings, Intel's basics look relatively strong. Server CPU demand and advanced packaging are the main catalysts. But whether the stock keeps rising still depends on Q4 guidance and foundry progress.
$90 is the key short-term defense level. $95–100 is the upside breakout zone. If earnings meet expectations, the stock may chop between $90–95, and falling IV helps some seller strategies. If it breaks $100, watch $105. If it breaks below $89.7, watch for a drop toward $85 and $80.
