Yen Intervention: Why Kioxia Rose While Samsung and SK Hynix Fell

Why did Kioxia rise while Samsung and SK hynix fell after the yen intervention? Read on to understand the different market drivers, then join the discussion at the end for a chance to earn Tiger Coins. 🪙

The United States and Japan recently intervened to support the yen, pulling USD/JPY down from nearly 164 to around 155 before it rebounded toward 157–158.

Around the same time, KIOXIA HLDGS CORP (285A) rose, while Samsung Electronics ( 005930) and SK hynix (000660) fell sharply.

At first glance, this appears contradictory. A stronger yen should pressure Japanese exporters such as Kioxia while improving the relative competitiveness of Korean memory manufacturers.

However, the stocks were reacting to different factors.

Kioxia was trading on earnings, a major share buyback and a stock split. Samsung and SK hynix were affected mainly by profit-taking and leveraged-position unwinds.

Currency movements influence future earnings. Market positioning often determines today’s share price.

💴 Why Did the U.S. and Japan Intervene?

The weak yen had become one of the market’s most crowded trades. Investors borrowed low-cost yen and used the funds to buy higher-yielding assets.

As USD/JPY approached 164, the weak currency increased Japan’s food and energy import costs and raised concerns about disorderly market movements.

The intervention does not guarantee continued yen strength. Its main message was:

Betting on unlimited yen weakness is no longer risk-free.

The 160–164 area should therefore be viewed as a possible intervention zone rather than an officially declared red line.

📈 Why Did Kioxia Rise?

Kioxia’s rally was primarily an earnings and shareholder-return story.

The company reported strong quarterly revenue and operating profit, supported by AI data-centre demand and improving SSD sales. It also announced:

  • A share buyback of up to ¥800 billion;

  • Repurchases of up to 30 million shares;

  • A three-for-one stock split effective October 1.

These measures outweighed concerns about its slightly below-consensus profit outlook.

However, the rally does not mean a stronger yen is positive for Kioxia.

NAND products are largely priced in U.S. dollars, while Kioxia reports in yen and manufactures heavily in Japan. A stronger yen can reduce the value of overseas revenue and weaken its cost advantage against Korean competitors.

Kioxia’s latest quarterly forecast assumes an exchange rate of around ¥162 per dollar. If USD/JPY remains materially below that level, currency pressure could become more visible in future guidance.

📉 Why Did Samsung and SK Hynix Fall?

The Korean chip-stock sell-off was driven mainly by positioning.

Samsung and SK hynix had experienced a strong AI-related rally, attracting heavy exposure through margin financing and single-stock leveraged ETFs. When prices started falling, these products were forced to reduce exposure, creating additional selling pressure.

The decline was therefore driven by:

Profit-taking

Leveraged ETF rebalancing

Hedge-fund and margin deleveraging

Most of the forced unwind may now be nearing completion, but volatility could remain high while investors rebuild positions.

This means the sell-off should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of weakening memory demand.

⚖️ Who Benefits From a Stronger Yen?

A stronger yen could reduce Kioxia’s manufacturing advantage and improve the relative position of Korean memory producers.

Samsung may benefit more directly because it competes with Kioxia across NAND flash, enterprise SSDs and consumer storage.

SK hynix also has NAND exposure through Solidigm, but its valuation depends more heavily on:

  • HBM demand;

  • Server DRAM prices;

  • AI-customer supply agreements;

  • Manufacturing yields and margins.

From a currency perspective:

  • Kioxia: Negative if yen strength persists;

  • Samsung: Clearest relative NAND beneficiary;

  • SK hynix: Limited direct impact, with HBM remaining more important.

💾 What About SanDisk?

SanDisk (SNDK) operates NAND manufacturing facilities in Japan with Kioxia, so a stronger yen could increase some dollar-denominated production costs.

However, its outlook will still depend more on NAND prices, enterprise SSD demand, manufacturing yields and cost-sharing arrangements.

The more serious risk would be:

A rapidly strengthening yen combined with falling NAND prices.

👀 What Should Investors Watch?

1️⃣ USD/JPY

A move back above 160 could test whether authorities are willing to intervene again.

2️⃣ Kioxia’s ¥162 Assumption

Sustained trading below this level could create currency-related earnings pressure.

3️⃣ Korean Market Stabilisation

Lower volatility, continued foreign inflows and reduced forced selling would suggest that deleveraging is ending.

4️⃣ Memory Demand

NAND prices, AI-server demand, enterprise SSD growth and HBM orders will ultimately matter more than short-term currency movements.
