Technology shares de-risked ahead of the election

The $Invesco QQQ(QQQ)$ fell 1.37 per cent on Monday and the $S&P 500(.SPX)$ declined 0.52 per cent. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are being contested in the US midterm election. A change in congressional control could alter expectations for taxation, technology regulation, AI data-centre approvals and government spending.

The election was not the only reason technology shares fell. Oracle lost 8.78 per cent, AMD fell 7.59 per cent and Intel declined 8.97 per cent as investors continued to reduce exposure to companies associated with heavy AI investment. The result may shape the policy path, but companies still need to prove that investment can produce profit and cash.

Marvell's Lumentum acquisition could create synergies, but the cost came first

$Marvell Technology(MRVL)$ fell 12.72 per cent and Lumentum dropped 18.62 per cent. The companies signed a definitive all-stock agreement under which each Lumentum share will be exchanged for 4.5 Marvell shares. The transaction implies an enterprise value of about $115 billion. Based on the unaffected closing prices on 28 October, the consideration was worth roughly $1,132 per Lumentum share, a nominal premium of about 23.9 per cent.

The combination would put Marvell's switching silicon, DSP and custom-chip capabilities on the same platform as Lumentum's lasers, optical transceivers and optical circuit switches. Management expects more than $1 billion in annual run-rate cost synergies, while existing Marvell shareholders would own about 67 per cent of the combined company. The transaction is not expected to close until the first half of 2028 and still requires shareholder and regulatory approval. The market could calculate dilution, timing and integration costs immediately, while the long-term synergies remained unproven.

Strong Lumentum results could not protect a floating consideration

$Lumentum(LITE)$ also reported first-quarter financial-year 2027 revenue of $1.263 billion, up 136.5 per cent, with non-GAAP earnings of $4.57 a share. It guided next-quarter revenue to $1.575 billion to $1.625 billion and non-GAAP earnings to $5.90 to $6.20 a share. Optical demand was still strong, but the transaction structure dominated the share-price reaction.

The exchange ratio of 4.5 Marvell shares for each Lumentum share is fixed, so a fall in the buyer's share price reduces the seller's effective consideration. The stated premium was also calculated from prices before takeover speculation and is not value that investors receive immediately. Closing is more than a year away, leaving regulatory, market and integration risks. Strong standalone results can support Lumentum's underlying value, but they cannot remove its exposure to Marvell's share price.

Apple set a revenue record, but earnings quality stayed under review

$Apple(AAPL)$ closed down 1.88 per cent and fell about another 2.8 per cent after results. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 12 per cent to $114.5 billion, with earnings of $2.10 a share and a gross margin of 47.9 per cent. iPhone delivered a September-quarter revenue record and Services reached a new all-time high.

There were still two constraints. Earnings included a $0.05-a-share benefit from tariff refunds, which also lifted gross margin by about one percentage point. Greater China revenue was about $17.54 billion and came in below prior market expectations. Investors were also examining iPhone supply constraints and the cost of AI investment. Record revenue confirmed that demand remained healthy, but a further valuation expansion would require cleaner profit growth and stronger evidence from China and holiday-quarter margins.

Palantir grew revenue by 96 per cent and still faced a valuation test

$Palantir(PLTR)$ closed down 3.13 per cent and fell about another 3 per cent after results. Third-quarter revenue increased 96 per cent to $2.313 billion, while adjusted earnings were $0.44 a share. US commercial revenue rose 148 per cent to $984 million and adjusted free cash flow reached $1.22 billion. The company raised full-year revenue guidance to $8.530 billion to $8.534 billion.

Revenue, profit and cash flow all expanded, yet the shares did not respond positively because expectations were already unusually high. Palantir must show that near-doubling commercial growth can persist without government work slowing the overall pace. The test for a highly valued company is no longer whether it is growing, but whether growth can remain faster than the valuation is normalising.

AMD's results must provide more than a headline beat

$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ fell 7.59 per cent on Monday and is due to report third-quarter results after Tuesday's close. Management previously guided revenue to about $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million, with a non-GAAP gross margin of roughly 54.5 per cent. Investors will focus on data-centre GPU revenue, progress for MI450 and Helios systems, and the durability of gross margin.

The report will also influence pricing across the chip sector. Intel's weak outlook has already hurt the PC and server chain, while the Marvell transaction forced optical-interconnect investors to calculate integration costs. AMD needs more than a revenue beat: it must give a clear path for supply ramp-up, customer adoption and margins. Guidance is a management forecast, not a signed order, and it cannot be treated as realised supplier revenue.

The market did not reject growth; it started pricing the cost first

Monday's reactions shared one feature: the good news remained visible, but investors calculated the cost of delivery first. Marvell and Lumentum offered optical-interconnect synergies but brought dilution and a long closing period. Apple delivered record revenue but faced questions about refunds, regional demand and margins. Palantir nearly doubled revenue but carried an unusually high valuation. AMD had not reported, yet its shares already reflected concern about elevated expectations.

The next recovery will need three types of evidence: measurable merger progress, higher-quality profit and cash from revenue growth, and AI products converting into customer revenue on schedule. The midterm election can change the policy path, but each company's execution speed will determine how far its shares can recover.

A note on sources: percentage moves for QQQ, the S&P 500, Marvell, Lumentum, Apple, Palantir, AMD, Oracle and Intel use the 2 November US regular-session close. Earnings-reaction exception: Apple and Palantir use extended trading after their results. Transaction terms come from the definitive announcement by Marvell and Lumentum. Company figures come from the quarterly disclosures of Apple, Lumentum and Palantir; the AMD section uses the company's previously issued third-quarter guidance. The US federal election date comes from the Federal Election Commission. Company guidance does not equal a signed order and does not allocate fixed revenue to suppliers. The interpretation of valuation, synergies and market expectations is analysis. This is personal analysis and not investment advice.

For $DBS(D05.SI)$, our focus is the combination of net interest income, wealth fees and credit costs.

Constructive case: Lending income proves resilient, fees hold up against expectations and provisions remain manageable.

The correction is a healthy one. I think the AI and chip related stocks had a good run from the beginning of the year. Investors are seriously looking whether this will in turn generate good profits to companies. Good luck.

Data-centre growth would likely matter most, as it drives long-term revenue and signals market competitiveness.
