Risk appetite improved on election night without a broad market turn

The $Invesco QQQ(QQQ)$ gained 0.61 per cent on Tuesday and the $S&P 500(.SPX)$ rose 0.35 per cent as technology shares recovered from the previous session's decline. Democrats recorded early progress in several important Senate races, but control of both chambers remained unresolved. The result could influence technology regulation, taxation, AI data-centre approvals and government spending, yet markets did not make a large bet on one political outcome.

US-Iran negotiations also remained divided. Iran continued to link seven conditions to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and the US response had not closed the gap. WTI crude fell 1.56 per cent and Brent declined 1.82 per cent, indicating that the energy market did not price a further escalation in supply disruption that day. Political and geopolitical risks remained, but corporate results were the more immediate driver for technology shares.

AMD's record quarter made Data Centre nearly two-thirds of revenue

$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ closed up 3.68 per cent and gained about another 5 per cent after results. Third-quarter revenue increased 45 per cent to $13.377 billion, while non-GAAP earnings were $2.09 a share, both above market expectations. Data Centre revenue rose 97 per cent to a record $8.5 billion and represented about 64 per cent of total revenue. Instinct GPUs and EPYC processors drove the growth, with the MI450 series beginning to contribute.

The company guided fourth-quarter revenue to approximately $17 billion, plus or minus 3 per cent. The midpoint implies growth of about 66 per cent from a year earlier and 27 per cent from the previous quarter. Management expects growth to accelerate as production of Helios systems and Venice processors scales. Guidance is a management forecast, not a signed customer order or realised supplier revenue.

Revenue is accelerating, but gross margin is not rising with it

$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ reported a third-quarter non-GAAP gross margin of 56 per cent and guided the fourth quarter to approximately 55 per cent. Revenue could increase by more than a quarter sequentially while gross margin falls by one percentage point, suggesting that early manufacturing, system-integration and supply-chain costs remain significant. Investors will examine not only how many MI450 and Helios systems AMD can sell, but whether higher revenue produces stronger margins.

That tension also helps explain why the after-hours gain narrowed from a higher initial level. Data-centre demand has been validated, but further valuation expansion depends on product mix, supply execution and profit conversion. AMD is moving from selling individual chips towards complete rack-scale systems, increasing both its addressable market and the number of execution steps.

Memory and GPUs rebounded first, but one report does not establish a sector cycle

Before AMD reported, $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ rose 4.79 per cent, $Micron Technology(MU)$ gained 2.65 per cent and $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ advanced 2.22 per cent. Those regular-session moves reflected renewed buying in AI hardware ahead of the results and cannot be attributed to figures released after the close. AMD's subsequent report confirmed continued growth in data-centre investment and supported the demand case for memory, GPUs and high-speed interconnects.

Broader participation still needs more evidence. AMD's growth does not mean enterprise SSDs at Sandisk, HBM at Micron and GPUs at Nvidia will expand at the same rate. Each company faces different inventory, pricing and margin conditions. Results from Arm, Qualcomm and Coherent will provide the next tests of whether demand is spreading from server processors to edge AI and optical interconnects.

Grab's 8.71 per cent gain showed what the market rewarded more clearly

$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$ rose 8.71 per cent. Third-quarter revenue increased 27 per cent to $1.112 billion and adjusted EBITDA rose 73 per cent to $237 million. Trailing 12-month adjusted free cash flow reached $533 million, monthly transacting users set a record at 57 million and Financial Services achieved adjusted EBITDA profitability for the first time.

The company raised full-year revenue guidance to $4.15 billion to $4.20 billion and adjusted EBITDA guidance to $790 million to $800 million. Grab also repurchased $400 million of shares in September and October. Its stronger share-price reaction reflected more than revenue growth: profit, cash flow and capital returns improved together. Incentives and Southeast Asian consumer conditions remain risks, but operating leverage is now visible in the financial statements.

Today's earnings preview: mobility and obesity drugs pre-market, chips after-hours

$Uber(UBER)$ and $Novo-Nordisk A/S(NVO)$ report in the US pre-market. Consensus expectations for Uber are approximately $15 billion in revenue and $0.98 in earnings per share. Gross bookings, Mobility and Delivery growth, and spending on autonomous-driving partnerships will determine whether margins can hold. Novo Nordisk is expected to report about $11.07 billion in revenue and $0.73 in earnings per share, with attention on Wegovy and Ozempic sales, US net pricing and capacity utilisation.

$ARM Holdings(ARM)$, $Qualcomm(QCOM)$ and $Coherent(COHR)$ report after-hours. Consensus expectations for Arm are approximately $1.39 billion in revenue and $0.48 in earnings per share, with data-centre licensing, royalty rates and AI-chip design demand in focus. Qualcomm is expected to report about $10.32 billion and $2.20, with handset recovery, edge AI and automotive growth setting the quality of the result. Coherent is expected to report approximately $2.35 billion and $2.01; orders for 800G and 1.6T optical products and gross margin will show whether data-centre demand is reaching optical interconnects.

The sequence is straightforward: pre-market results test mobility margins and demand for obesity drugs, while after-hours reports test whether AI demand is spreading from servers to edge devices and optical interconnects. These figures are consensus expectations, not company guidance or signed orders.

The threshold for a sustained rebound is growth that leaves profit behind

$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ confirmed that AI data-centre demand remains strong, while Grab showed that investors will reward growth accompanied by improving cash flow. Their next tests are different. AMD must protect margin as complete systems scale, while Grab must sustain enough operating leverage to cover incentives, credit risk and competition.

A move from a one-day recovery to a durable technology rebound needs three forms of evidence: chip demand spreading across more parts of the supply chain, revenue growth producing higher profit and free cash flow, and political or geopolitical risks not lifting funding costs again. Strong demand alone is no longer sufficient; expansion must preserve returns.

A note on sources: percentage moves for QQQ, the S&P 500, AMD, Sandisk, Micron, Nvidia and Grab use the 3 November US regular-session close. Earnings-reaction exception: AMD uses extended trading after its results. AMD and Grab figures come from their official third-quarter disclosures. Earnings dates use company investor-relations calendars; preview figures are market consensus expectations, not company guidance. The election section uses publicly reported vote-counting information available at publication time. The US-Iran section uses public reporting, while crude-oil moves use the 3 November futures session. Company guidance does not equal a signed order and does not allocate fixed revenue to suppliers. The interpretation of sector participation, valuation and market expectations is analysis. This is personal analysis and not investment advice.

To determine whether AMD’s results signal the start of a broader semiconductor recovery, I would first examine trends in their revenue growth across key segments like data centre, gaming, and embedded solutions. Sustained demand in these areas often reflects broader market improvement. I’d then compare AMD’s performance with peers such as Intel, Nvidia, and TSMC to see if growth is sector-wide or company-specific. Monitoring market indicators like chip demand in PCs, smartphones, and cloud services can provide context. Finally, analyst forecasts and inventory trends across the supply chain would help confirm if the recovery is likely to be durable and widespread.

    NVDA:AI GPU

    NVDA GPU
